Ye Shiying’s attempt at a defense didn’t have a chance to be voiced before the criminal investigator silenced it.
The detective seemed to read Ye Shiying’s thoughts and continued, "Moreover, we have compared the voice of that man; it is indeed Qin Yansen, who was murdered not long ago."
"He was also your fiancé, Miss Ye."
Upon hearing this, Ye Shiying’s eyes, brimming with tears, flashed a glint of ruthlessness, which quickly faded away, reverting back to her pitiful appearance.
Ye Shiying’s tears broke free, quickly falling from her eyes.
"I’m asking you a question! What are you crying for!" the detective raised his voice.
Startled by the detective, Ye Shiying shook slightly, then, while crying, rolled up her sleeves to reveal the bruised marks on her arms.
The marks were evident, clearly a result of being beaten.
"These were caused by Qin Yansen," Ye Shiying said.
The detective frowned, "He hit you?"
"Yes, about a week ago. He had too much to drink, and I went to pick him up from the bar."
"After we got home, I made him some soup to sober up. By the time I came out, it seemed like he had fallen asleep. Worried he’d catch a cold sleeping on the sofa, I thought to wake him."
"But after Qin Yansen woke up, he started beating me! He pulled my hair, slammed my head against the wall, and then began to whip me with his belt! He didn’t stop until he was too tired!"
"Then why didn’t you call the police?" the detective asked.
Ye Shiying looked at the detective with an expression of utmost grief, "He was my fiancé, and we were about to get married."
"Getting married to a man prone to violence, didn’t you consider the consequences?" the detective furrowed his brows, clearly unable to understand Ye Shiying’s thinking.
"Heh," Ye Shiying chuckled softly, her laugh tinged with mockery, "Actually, I was practically sold to the Qin Family by my parents. If I don’t marry Qin Yansen, do you think my life at home would be any better?"
The detective frowned and remained silent; some things, not experienced firsthand, cannot be truly understood.
"The second time was four days ago. He had drunk too much again that night, and I brought him back home. No sooner had we arrived home than he started hitting me!"
"But he was drunk and accidentally fell down. I was going to help him up, but when I saw the belt in his hand, I stopped."
"I don’t know what came over me at that moment; I just couldn’t control myself and snatched the belt from his hand."
"And then, just like he beat me, I returned it stroke by stroke!"
"During that, you made a call to Ye Wanwan," the detective said.
Ye Shiying nodded, "Yes."
"Why did you call her?" the detective pressed on.
Biting her lower lip, Ye Shiying said, "She knew full well what kind of person Qin Yansen was, yet she still wouldn’t help me. I hate her!"
"But as far as I know, Ye Wanwan warned you, telling you Qin Yansen was violent, yet you insisted on marrying him."
"If my uncle were willing to help our family’s company through its difficulties, I wouldn’t have had to marry Qin Yansen! Ye Wanwan knew this, but she only came to me to say I shouldn’t marry him, without going to my uncle to implore him to help the company!"
"If she had truly wanted to help me, she would have done everything she could to stop me from marrying that devil, Qin Yansen!"
As she spoke, Ye Shiying’s emotions became uncontrollably intense.
The detective, frowning, continued, "What about after the call was disconnected? Did you kill Qin Yansen then?"
