Watching the little kitten meow at her, Ye Wanwan’s nose tingled, and she couldn’t help her eyes from reddening. She carefully reached out and touched the kitten’s head.
"I found you!" Ye Wanwan whispered.
Shen Yi also walked over, and when Ye Wanwan prepared to pick up the dirty little kitten, he couldn’t help wrinkling his brow, "Wanwan."
Shen Yi was worried that the kitten might scratch Ye Wanwan and also felt that the kitten was very dirty. What if it carried some virus?
Ye Wanwan looked up at Shen Yi and coquettishly said, "Shen Yi, can we take it home, please?"
Seeing Ye Wanwan’s pitiful little expression, Shen Yi found he couldn’t bring himself to refuse her.
"It’s so pitiful, if we don’t take it home, it might die," Ye Wanwan said with a furrowed brow, playing at Shen Yi’s sympathies.
Shen Yi was somewhat helpless, but in the end, he put aside the things in his hands and then took off his coat, "Let me do it."
Ye Wanwan stepped to the side and watched as Shen Yi squatted down, wrapped his hands with his coat first, extracted the kitten from the crevice of the trash bin, and then wrapped the entire kitten with his coat.
"Can you manage that?" Shen Yi looked toward the picnic mat and some leftover food on the ground nearby.
It was still a walk to where the car was parked, and he didn’t feel reassured letting Ye Wanwan hold the kitten, yet he was worried she couldn’t carry those other items.
Ye Wanwan understood Shen Yi’s concern, immediately turned around and picked up the items, declaring confidently, "I can!"
"Then be careful," Shen Yi said helplessly. It seemed she really liked this dirty little kitten.
Well, since no one at home was allergic to cat hair, she might as well keep it if she liked it.
Ye Wanwan, with the picnic mat in her arms, followed beside Shen Yi, her eyes constantly fixed on the kitten in his arms.
Shen Yi could only remind her, "Watch your step, careful not to fall."
"Mm-mm," Ye Wanwan nodded quickly, but her gaze remained fixed on the kitten in Shen Yi’s arms.
Shen Yi found a veterinary hospital and sent the kitten there for a check-up and, incidentally, a bath.
The doctor examined the little kitten; its condition was very poor, severely malnourished. The doctor said if they had waited another day or two, it might have starved to death.
The kitten also had many bite marks, probably from other stray cats. It was filthy, but because it was too weak, it couldn’t be bathed yet—they would have to wait until its condition improved.
Ye Wanwan listened with a heavy heart.
Standing in the small room designed for cats, she looked at the little kitten that continued to meow at her and said with compassion, "Be good, you rest well here and get better soon, okay?"
As the kitten meowed again at her, Ye Wanwan’s eyes reddened and she murmured softly, "You’ve got to hang in there, or Zhouzhou will be sad."
Shen Yi, having paid, entered from outside and saw Ye Wanwan looking so woebegone. He rubbed her head and comforted her softly, "The doctor said it would recover quickly after a few days of care."
He couldn’t feel too much affection for this dirty kitten like Ye Wanwan did, but he didn’t think her behavior was over sentimental. Instead, he wanted to protect her kindness.
"Shen Yi, let’s pick it up and take it home after it gets better in a few days," Ye Wanwan said, fighting back the tears, her voice hoarse.
"Okay," Shen Yi agreed.
