THE DON'S SECRET WIFE Chapter 104

Aria moved closer until there was no distance left between them. She rested her forehead against his chest, feeling the steady, heavy rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her cheek. Luca let his hand fall to the back of her head, fingers threading through her hair with a touch that was too gentle for a man who had just ordered two executions.

"How do you stand this?" she whispered. "The weight. The decisions. The blood."

His breath left him slowly. "I do not stand it," he said. "I endure it. Because if I do not, everything my family built falls apart. Everything I promised to protect disappears."

"And what about you?" she asked. "What about the man behind the Don?"

He did not answer immediately. Instead, he guided her to sit on the edge of the council table. She felt the cold surface through the fabric of her blouse as he stood between her knees, his hands resting lightly on her thighs.

"I lost myself a long time ago," he said. "When I was forced to choose between who I wanted to be and who I had to become."

"And who did you want to be?" she whispered.

His eyes softened, shadows lifting for the first time that morning.

"Someone who did not need to bury pieces of himself to survive. Someone who could love without fearing the consequences. Someone who did not have to raise a gun to the only family he had left."

The pain in his voice made her chest ache.

"You are still that man," she said.

He shook his head. "No. That man would not do what I did today."

She cupped his face, guiding him to meet her gaze.

"That man would not have saved me," she countered. "That man would not have fought for us. That man would not have chosen me over power, over pride, over blood."

His eyes searched hers, conflicted, raw.

"You keep saying I chose you," he murmured. "But sometimes I wonder if you regret choosing me."

Aria’s breath caught, and her fingers tightened slightly against his jaw.

"Never," she said firmly. "Not once. Not for a moment."

"Even now?" His voice was almost a whisper.

"Especially now."

A long silence stretched between them. Luca seemed to drink in her words, letting them settle into the parts of him that had been hollow for too long. His hands slid to her waist, steadying himself as much as her.

"You do not know what you are risking," he said, his voice low. "With me. With this life."

"I know exactly what I am risking," she replied. "And I am not afraid."

"You should be."

She shook her head. "Fear is not what protects us. Truth is."

He leaned in until their foreheads touched again. The heat of him surrounded her, the quiet strength of him, and the vulnerability he allowed only her to see.

"Tell me the truth then," he said softly. "What do you see happening now?"

She swallowed. Her secret sat on her tongue, a weight she was not ready to release. Not yet. He was too fragile this morning, too carved open by betrayal and grief. To tell him now would twist his heart in a way she did not want.

So she chose another truth instead.

"I see you rebuilding," she said. "Not from pride, but from necessity. I see you becoming a different kind of leader. A stronger one."

Luca exhaled slowly, his hands tightening at her waist. "Stronger leaders have enemies."

"Then we face them," she said. "Together."

The word settled between them, warm and dangerous.

Together.

Luca closed his eyes, his forehead resting against her shoulder. She wrapped her arms around him, feeling the tension slowly unwind beneath her touch. He held her tighter than usual, as if afraid she might slip through his fingers the moment he let go.

After a long moment, he spoke again.

"You do not know what you mean to me," he whispered.

"Then show me," she said softly.

He lifted his head. His eyes were darker now, not with anger, but with something deeper. Something that made her pulse quicken and her breath catch.

He leaned in and kissed her. Slow. Devastating. The kind of kiss that said everything he did not have the words for. The kind that tasted like surrender and desperation and gratitude all at once.

Aria melted into it, her fingers sliding into his hair as he pulled her closer. The kiss deepened, his lips taking hers with a hunger held back for hours. He kissed her like she was the only anchor he had left, the only place he could put down the armor and breathe.

When he finally pulled away, his forehead rested against hers, both of them breathing hard.

"I cannot lose you," he said again.

"You will not," she whispered. "You are not alone anymore, Luca."

He brushed his nose lightly against hers. "I feel stronger when you are near."

"Then let me stay."

He kissed her again. Softer now. Grateful. He closed his eyes, pressing a final kiss to her forehead before he gently lowered her feet back to the ground.

"We should go," he said quietly.

"To where?"

"Anywhere but here," he murmured. "I do not want to look at this room anymore."

Aria nodded and took his hand. His fingers laced through hers instantly, holding with an urgency that made her heart ache.

They walked out of the chamber together, leaving behind the ghosts of betrayal, the echoes of screams, and the shadows of decisions that could never be undone.

In the hallway, the sunlight finally reached them. Warm. Soft. Real.

Luca paused, letting the light hit his face. Aria squeezed his hand gently. He looked down at her, and for the first time since the docks, she saw something fragile in his eyes.

Hope.

Not much.

But enough.

He lifted her hand and kissed her knuckles, a gesture so tender it did not match the cruelty he had shown hours earlier.

"We will get through this," she said.

He nodded. "With you, I believe it."

They walked away from the chamber and toward a future that was uncertain, dangerous, and heavy with the weight of coming storms.

But they walked together.

And for now, that was enough.
