The Fallen Author's Heart in the Land of Love Chapter 18

Chapter 18 - 18: The Hunt of the Damned

Aira ran.

She had no time to think, no time to breathe—only to run.

Her body screamed in protest, her legs burned from exhaustion, her lungs ached with every desperate gulp of air. But she couldn't stop.

Not here. Not in this place.

She had made it out of that cursed castle, but she was far from safe.

Not when he was still alive.

Not when Lord Varlen had looked at her with those disgusting, knowing eyes as she fled.

Eyes that held no fear.

No concern.

Only amusement.

He had let her go.

He knew she wouldn't escape.

And he had been right.

Because the hunt had already begun.

The Sound That Froze Her Blood

The first sign was the barking.

Aira's heart nearly stopped at the sound of it—deep, guttural howls that split through the cold night air like the wail of the damned.

Hunting dogs.

Not just one or two.

A pack.

The realization hit her like a hammer to the chest.

Lord Varlen's men weren't just searching for her.

They were hunting her.

Her stomach twisted, her breath shuddering in terror.

If they caught up to her, she wouldn't even have the luxury of a clean death.

The dogs would tear her apart.

Or worse.

They'd drag her back to him.

To that place.

No.

No, she wouldn't let that happen.

She forced herself to move faster, her feet pounding against the frozen ground, her body surging forward with the kind of desperation only a cornered animal could feel.

And that's what she was, wasn't she?

A rat scurrying in the dark.

A deer running from the fangs of the wolves.

And the wolves were closing in.

Arrows in the Dark

Aira barely managed to duck as an arrow whistled past her ear, embedding itself into a tree with a dull thunk.

Her blood turned to ice.

They have archers?!

She risked a glance back—and immediately regretted it.

She saw them.

The guards, their dark silhouettes barely illuminated by the torchlight behind them, sprinting after her with terrifying speed. Their armor clanked against the cold night air, swords gleaming under the moonlight.

But worst of all—

The dogs were at their heels.

Large, monstrous creatures bred for one thing.

Tearing flesh.

And they were after hers.

Another arrow shot toward her.

She dove to the side, her shoulder slamming into the rough bark of a tree, pain shooting through her body. She gasped but forced herself to keep moving.

She had no weapons. No plan.

Nothing but her own two feet and a will to survive.

The forest loomed ahead, a dark abyss swallowing the land.

Her only chance.

She ran into it.

The Woods of No Return

The moment she stepped into the dense thicket of trees, the world seemed to change.

The temperature dropped, the wind howled through the branches like a chorus of whispers. The shadows stretched longer, deeper, like unseen hands reaching out to drag her down.

But she had no choice.

She sprinted into the darkness.

Branches slashed at her arms, thorns ripped at her skin, but she didn't stop.

The barking grew louder. Closer.

And then—

A snarl.

Aira didn't even have time to scream before she felt something heavy crash into her back, sending her sprawling forward.

The impact knocked the breath from her lungs, her face slamming into the damp earth.

Pain exploded through her body.

She twisted, her heart hammering in terror—

And came face-to-face with one of the hunting dogs.

Its eyes burned red in the moonlight, its massive jaws curled back in a snarl. Saliva dripped from its fangs, its breath hot and foul against her skin.

It lunged.

Aira barely rolled away in time, the dog's teeth snapping inches from her throat. She scrambled backward, her hands clawing at the dirt as the beast snarled, preparing for another strike.

She had no weapon.

No defense.

This was it.

She was going to die here.

The dog leapt again—

But this time, Aira reacted.

With a desperate scream, she grabbed a broken tree branch and swung it with all her might.

It connected.

The dog yelped, momentarily stunned, but not for long.

The other dogs were closing in.

Aira ran.

Her vision blurred with panic, her muscles screaming in agony. The forest was endless, stretching in every direction with no sign of escape.

But she couldn't stop.

Not until her legs gave out.

Not until her heart burst from her chest.

Not until she was either dead—or free.

A Cold and Merciless Night

The chase didn't end.

The guards didn't stop.

The dogs never tired.

Aira ran for what felt like hours, her body numb, her breath coming in ragged, painful gasps.

She didn't know where she was anymore.

Only that the horrors behind her were still there.

Still hunting.

Still waiting for her to falter.

But she wouldn't.

She couldn't.

Because she knew one thing.

If they caught her—

If they took her back to that castle—

She would never escape again.

So she kept running.

Through the night.

Through the terror.

Through the pain.

Until either the world swallowed her whole—

Or she escaped it.
