Gu Bei and Xiao Ruobing drove an off-road vehicle, charging through the highway entrance and onto the expressway, heading towards their hometown.
Sadly, when the apocalypse descended, countless people had gotten into their cars trying to flee via the highway or in search of relatives.
Sixty to seventy percent of these people had turned into zombies, while ten to twenty percent were bitten and devoured by zombie family members or passersby.
Less than ten percent of people actually survived.
They barely escaped from the zombies, some driving, some walking, fleeing the highway.
Only some haphazardly parked vehicles remained on the highway, or broken wrecks that had been smashed to pieces.
Of course, there were also the aimlessly wandering zombies, making growling noises as they roamed.
Gu Bei clenched his teeth and pressed hard on the accelerator, relying on the high chassis and modified shell of the off-road vehicle to force a path through.
After more than half a month, they finally neared their hometown. The off-road vehicle they had found in North City was already wrecked beyond use.
By the roadside, Gu Bei found another one temporarily, and they gathered some food and drinking water from a convenience store at a gas station and a small supermarket at a service area.
The two of them managed to alternate between hunger and fullness, returning to their old home with some scares but unharmed.
However, as they approached the third ring, the number of zombies around them increased.
At first, Gu Bei could easily use his Superpower, directly shattering the zombies’ heads with Ice Cones.
But after numerous uses and over time, his Superpower began to deplete.
And yet, the number of zombies continued to increase; this was just the third ring.
The Gu Family and Xiao Family were wealthy, though they hadn’t made it onto any list of the richest, they still possessed assets in the hundreds of millions.
Both families lived in the wetland villa area in Southern City, but Gu Bei and Xiao Ruobing had come from the north.
To return home, they had to cross the entire city.
City C was only a second-tier city, but its population had still reached seven or eight million.
If going by a half-ratio, at the beginning of the apocalypse, three to four million zombies would have been created.
Plus the zombies that later transformed due to being bitten, that would make an estimated total of five to six million zombies.
This was virtually a massive graveyard teeming with the living dead.
Looking at those bizarrely shaped, blood-stained monsters, Gu Bei, who had completely adapted to his identity as a Superpower User, turned somewhat pale.
"Gu Bei, do you think, how are my parents and your parents doing now?"
Not having seen with her own eyes the fall of City C, Xiao Ruobing could still deceive herself—maybe the situation back home wasn’t that severe, perhaps their parents and relatives could still be alive!
But facing the throngs of wandering zombies and the lifeless city in the distance, where was the bustling prosperity of olden days to be found?
This place was truly a city of death.
"They, they’ll be fine, they must be!"
Gu Bei’s heart was pounding, but as a man, as the protective deity of his fiancee, he couldn’t speak discouraging words.
"Our neighborhood doesn’t have many residents, and besides, my parents have a habit of storing things..."
In a villa district, of course, the population density would be much lower than in the high-rise residential areas in the city center.
Fewer people meant fewer zombies, and so the danger would also be much reduced.
Plus, being far from downtown, where grocery shopping isn’t as convenient, the housekeepers in their homes would usually buy a lot of stuff at once.
Additionally, Gu Bei’s brother was a biologist, and their father owned a pharmaceutical company, so they weren’t lacking in medical supplies either.
The Xiao and Gu families were neighbors and had become very close due to the engagement between Gu Bei and Xiao Ruobing.
When the apocalypse struck, the two families would certainly help each other and jointly resist the crisis.
Gu Bei desperately comforted himself with these thoughts.
"Yes, yes, they must be okay!"
Xiao Ruobing didn’t know if it was Gu Bei’s reassurances that reached her, or if she was just trying to comfort herself, but she kept nodding her head.

So, they found a temporary dwelling at the highway entrance outside the city.
