Lin Caisang glanced sideways at Ya Molian, her heart suddenly filled with unease.
She was just a peasant girl, proficient in medical skills but without power. If not for Ya Molian’s mention, she would never have considered Hongling Town to be as dangerous as a dragon’s den.
“You don’t need to worry. I’m here, and I won’t let any harm come to you,” Ya Molian comforted her, seeing her fall silent.
“Brother Molian, do you think that the strange disease here could be connected to the magistrate sending people to investigate something? Could the townsfolk have feared that any information might leak, and so decided to silence those who knew too much?”
Upon hearing Ya Molian’s comforting words, Lin Caisang felt somewhat relieved and voiced her own doubts.
“How long have you been here? Have you found the source of the disease?” Rather than answering her, Ya Molian questioned her instead.
“The source of the disease? That’s even stranger.”
Mentioning the source of the disease made Lin Caisang feel helpless.
“Everyone in Hongling Town has contracted the disease, yet everyone seems to have been poisoned.” Lin Caisang said.
Ya Molian frowned, confused. In his mind, illness and poisoning were two distinctly different things: an illness is an illness, a poison is a poison. How could it be both? What was the logic behind combining the two?
“You’re not a doctor. Maybe you don’t understand what this bizarre symptom is like.”
Lin Caisang’s expression was grave. Her somber tone was hidden behind a face mask, but it was clearly communicated by her voice.
“I’ve treated many patients, but I’ve never seen such a strange disease. It contains poison… How can I explain it? It’s like extracting venom from a snake that also happens to be carrying a strange disease. Then, the venom and the disease merge, forming a strange and difficult to cure disease.”
She mumbled silently in her heart while talking, feeling as if she’d confused herself. Would Ya Molian be able to understand?
“In other words, they’ve been poisoned?” Ya Molian summarised her words and asked.
Lin Caisang was momentarily stunned before nodding.
“Maybe. It seems like that could be the case.”
In truth, she didn’t know. She was still investigating whether it was a disease or a poison.
“Why do they want to kill you? What have you done since you arrived here?” Ya Molian asked.
How was it that this little girl arrived less than a day ago and already people had their sights set on her? She may be a doctor, but she didn’t look the part. She seemed more like an innocent con artist. Who would be so eager to harm her?
“I haven’t done much. I just investigated one person, who turned out to be the source of the disease in Hongling Town. However, he’s already dead.” Lin Caisang said.
She told Ya Molian about her suspicions towards the Gong Family, recalling the guess she’d made earlier. They were probably people sent by Old Master Gong. Perhaps her words had scared him.
Ya Molian shot her an exasperated glance.
She’d only just arrived and was already stirring up trouble. She was indeed an unreliable little girl.
“Anything you need to do can be done by the clerks. Why must you expose yourself? Had I not arrived, your life could have been in serious danger.”
