Following Gu Ya’s words, the faces of Wan Da’an and Wan Ruyan were as unpleasant as could be, having lost all their dignity in front of so many people.
Mrs. Han was inwardly mocking Wan Ruyan, finding the Wan Family’s embarrassment quite the spectacle that afternoon, as if they’d been slapped resoundingly across the face.
Mrs. Zhang, the eldest sister-in-law, had schemed against the husband and wife, Su Yunjin and Gu Ya, and now seeing that Gu Ya had absolutely no interest in Wan Ruyan, Mrs. Zhang’s expression darkened.

Gu Ya also hadn’t eaten much at noon, feeling no appetite while sitting with those unbearable relatives, and by chance his little wife was boiling noodles.
He could surely join her for a bowl.
“Yunniang, make a little extra for me,” Gu Ya said.
Su Yunjin looked up at Gu Ya, somewhat surprised, “You want to eat too?” She looked Gu Ya up and down–she hadn’t had her fill.
Had Gu Ya not had enough either?
Indeed, as Su Yunjin pondered, Gu Ya said, “I didn’t get enough to eat either!”
Inside the house, Su Yunjin and Gu Ya prepared something to eat, while outside Wan Da’an got drunk on wine. Gu Hengniang then helped him to rest.
With Gu Changshun not back yet and all the other rooms at the Gu Family home occupied except his, Gu Hengniang helped Wan Da’an to Gu Changshun’s room to sleep.
With Wan Ruyan proving incapable, Mrs. Zhang decided to take matters into her own hands, not believing that she personally couldn’t teach Wan Ruyan to split Su Yunjin and Gu Ya.
Wan Da’an, when drunk, would talk nonsense, and Gu Hengniang, disliking the sight of her husband intoxicated, felt that her husband Wan Da’an had utterly lost face at the Gu Family’s home that day.

The two bowls of plain noodles turned out fragrantly delicious.
After finishing his bowl of noodles, broth and all, Gu Ya felt satisfied, while Su Yunjin had eaten her noodles but left the soup behind. Only after a second serving of noodles did the satisfied couple feel truly full.
