The phone rang again, as if penetrating every gap and seeping through her fingers.
After what seemed like an eternity, the phone stopped ringing.
She closed her eyes, intending to sleep for a while, but was jolted by the sudden ring of the phone.
The phone was on the bedside table, annoying her, and she seemed to see the maid again, coaxingly, “Pick it up…”
Her hand uncontrollably answered the call, unaware that on the other side, someone else picked up the phone simultaneously. But after hearing her say “Hello”, the other person remained silent, just quietly listening.
“Hello, is this Ms. Liu Mingzhu?”

Though the child was her enemy’s, she was still an innocent child, Liu Mingzhu didn’t want any more ties with her, nor had she wished any misfortune upon the child.

The person on the other end of the phone heaved a heavy sigh, “They have now changed their minds and sent the child back, refusing to care for her any longer.”

The person on the phone apologetically continued, “I’m calling because… the child isn’t eating or drinking, just sitting there calling for her mother, if this continues, it might be dangerous.”

“We know this is difficult for you, but we still hope you could see her, talk to her, even just to feed her a meal.”
“Go ahead…” the maid repeated in her other ear.
Liu Mingzhu bit her lower lip hard, but did not agree.
She felt her illness was getting worse, already starting to hallucinate, a sign of severe depression.
She used all her strength to finally hang up the phone.
The person on the other end, hearing the call disconnect, sighed deeply, while someone next to them asked, “How did it go, is she coming?”
The director helplessly responded, “She probably won’t come. It took several calls to get through, and she hung up as soon as I made my request.”
“No definitive reply doesn’t mean a refusal. Why don’t you try one more time?”
The director shook his head, “No, perhaps she is too embarrassed to refuse outright and just wants me to realize it and stop calling.”
