Madam Yao bowed slightly: “Yes.”
With the approval of Old Lady Gu, Madam Yao settled herself comfortably in Songhe Court.
Sure enough, in a little while, Mrs. Ling came by.
She was taken aback upon seeing Madam Yao.
Madam Yao smiled and said to her, “It has only been a day, why are you looking at me ?”
Gu Chenglin had come crying to Mrs. Ling early this morning, claiming that Madam Yao was a villainous character, who has been privately meeting other men and even let Madam Yao escape; Mrs. Ling was already aware that the scheme last night had failed.
She marveled at how Madam Yao was so fortunate to have survived this ordeal!
Mrs. Ling, hiding her emotions, said, “Nothing much, it’s just I heard the wife was ill, and I didn’t expect the wife would come to pay respects to the old lady in her sick state.”
Fearful of spreading her sickness to the old lady!
Playing it down, Madam Yao said: “Madam is really concerned about my courtyard.”
With this comment, Mrs. Ling’s face tensed up. Since she hadn’t been to Songhe Court earlier, she should not have known about Madam Yao’s illness. Yet, by openly stating so, wasn’t she implying that she had been spying on the happenings in Songhe Court?
It was one thing to spy on Madam Yao, but utterly unacceptable to spy on Old Lady Gu!
Old Lady Gu’s brows furrowed.
Mrs. Ling hurriedly said, “I heard it from Lord Hou. This morning, Lord Hou went to Yamen, and I ran into him.”
Madam Yao looked surprised: “Lord Hou didn’t come back home at all last night.”
Recently, something seemed to have happened at the Ministry of Works. Lord Gu had gone to Bishui Alley and brought her back to the residence. After visiting Gu Chenglin’s courtyard, he went straight off to the Ministry of Works.
Mrs. Ling has now ended up smearing her own name even more.
Old Lady Gu was no fool; how could she not see through Mrs. Ling’s attempts at justifying herself?
Old Lady Gu’s face grew even colder.
Mrs. Ling was terribly embarrassed. In her heart, she cursed Madam Yao relentlessly for becoming increasingly difficult to deal with!
Madam Yao aimed to diffuse the tension: “Well, perhaps one of the maidservants in my courtyard inadvertently spilled the beans, and madam did not mean it. Mother, having too many dim sums can be cloying, I’ll make some flower tea for you.”
Not only were Madam Yao’s dim sums delicious, her tea was very fragrant too.
Madam Yao went to the Tea Room to prepare a pot of flower tea: “Would Mrs. Ling like a cup?”
Mrs. Ling did not dare to drink the tea prepared by Madam Yao.
Madam Yao said, “This flower tea is made from the dried flowers picked personally by mother. It’s a lot more fragrant than the dried flowers I could buy outside.”
If Mrs. Ling refused to taste something from the old lady, wouldn’t that be disrespectful?
Besides, on second thought, Mrs. Ling figured Madam Yao wouldn’t dare to poison her in front of the old lady.
Being young and bold, Madam Yao hadn’t anticipated all the considerations of Mrs. Ling and therefore had fewer reservations.
She indeed slipped the drug powder Gu Jiao had given her into Mrs. Ling’s tea.
It was really a matter of one daring to give, and the other daring to do it.
Still, Mrs. Ling was cautious. She took a sip and waited for a while to ensure no ill effects took place before she took the second sip, then the third.
Have to say, Madam Yao’s tea brewing skill was unmatched. Despite loathing Madam Yao, Mrs. Ling couldn’t resist finishing the entire cup.
Even till late night, no bad news came from Mrs. Ling’s side.
Madam Yao was puzzled. Could it be that the old lady didn’t actually give her poison?
The anomaly occurred the next day.
When Mrs. Ling came to pay respects to Old Lady Gu early in the morning, she suddenly smelled the scent of steamed buns, causing her to vomit.
The old lady was quite taken aback by her retching, but still called for the mansion’s doctor.
After taking her pulse, the doctor immediately said to Old Lady Gu, “Congratulations, my Lady. Mrs. Ling is pregnant!”
