Upon receiving the message, Ye Xingguang immediately called his father.
Song Chuanqi, who answered the phone, didn’t make a sound for a long while. He was sitting in the courtyard soaking in the sun, a habit suggested by Chang Danran. Bai Lanwu was currently in the kitchen preparing a fruit salad, intending to bring it out to him.
Ye Xingguang said excitedly over the phone, “Dad, Tang Zhou’s brother Tang Xiao has been found through the search. From the male babies who were born around the same time as our deceased sister at the T City People’s Hospital, the one with the most prominent family background is Leng Chenmo’s mother. So, it is very likely that this is true.”
Song Chuanqi remained silent, his facial muscles tense, as a car drove into the yard and stopped.
Tang Zhou got out of the car first, but Leng Chenmo didn’t immediately follow. He just sat in the driver’s seat, looking through the windshield at the unfamiliar middle-aged couple in the yard—Song Chuanqi and Bai Lanwu.
His hands unconsciously gripped the steering wheel tightly, only to loosen a bit, freeing one hand to search his pocket for a cigarette.
He usually smoked, but wasn’t particularly addicted. Recently, due to family planning, he had thrown away all his cigarettes. Now, without a cigarette available, he had nothing to help moderate his emotions.
Leng Chenmo simply leaned against the back of his seat, silently watching outside the window.
Tang Zhou walked around the car, stood outside the driver’s seat and knocked on the window, “Hey, get out of the car, what are you doing sitting there?”
Leng Chenmo ignored Tang Zhou. He probably needed some personal space to process this unexpected revelation about his origins.
“Humph, what a coward, afraid to even get out of the car to meet his own parents.”
Tang Zhou, however, didn’t face the same psychological pressure and, giddy with excitement, rushed over to Song Chuanqi. With saccharine sweetness, he said, “Uncle, did little Xingguang call you? This is the report from the secret paternity test my Little…Chenmo had done with you. Hot off the press, take a look. The results are genuine. My Chenmo is too nervous to get out of the car to meet you right now, it’s definitely not because he doesn’t want to.”
Too preoccupied to end his phone call, Song Chuanqi accepted the paternity test report from Tang Zhou and started reading.
As Song Chuanqi read, Tang Zhou excitedly explained, “The blood sample for the paternity test came from when the nurse made a house call to draw your blood for tests. Because our Chenmo was unsure then, he didn’t want to make a big fuss about it, so we did it secretly. The results prove that he is your long-lost biological son.”
Bai Lanwu, who was coming out of the kitchen with a tray of fruit salad, upon hearing Tang Zhou’s voice and her hands slipped, dropping the entire tray.
Bai Lanwu’s mind went blank, she merely squatted down automatically to pick up the broken porcelain dish. Herhand was accidentally cut by a piece of it, and blood immediately started flowing from her finger.
Seeing this, the calm Leng Chenmo in the car pushed the car door open and walked towards Bai Lanwu.
He crouched down, his tall body casting a shadow over her, and said, “Don’t bother with it, let me clean it up.”
Leng Chenmo picked up all the broken porcelain pieces from the ground and threw them into a garbage bin. He then asked the housekeeper for a band-aid. When the housekeeper brought it, Leng Chenmo walked over to the dazed Bai Lanwu with the band-aid in his hand. His voice tried to convey mature steadiness, but betrayed a hint of nervousness, “Let me bandage it for you.”
Everyone was taken by surprise, including the bewildered Bai Lanwu.
Bai Lanwu looked at Leng Chenmo, who was carefully attending to her porcelain-cut finger. The tears she had been holding back suddenly broke free, streaming down her face. A lump seemed to form in her throat, stopping any sound from coming out. Could this child… really be… her son…?
