Mickey was too far away, and by the time she reacted, it was already too late. She watched helplessly as the pot of scalding chicken soup was about to splash onto Gu Qili’s head when suddenly, an arm swept across, followed by two sturdy arms encircling her, slightly bowed like a protective umbrella covering her head.
Gu Qili was stunned by the sudden incident until she saw Chen Yishu’s handsome face contorted in pain.
His arms were curled around protecting the top of her head, his face very close to hers and his eyes exceptionally bright and clear, different from those pampered young masters; the light shining through was like sunshine, warming her withered heart.
"Yishu." Gu Qili was so worried that her voice went hoarse.
The young man holding the stone pot stood there, at a loss. He meant well, but his attempt to help had backfired.
And Hu Jiaojiao had her hands covering her face in horror, so frightened that even her tears were frozen.
She had never expected Chen Yishu to appear out of nowhere.
"Brother Yishu." Hu Jiaojiao’s voice trembled, her complexion deathly pale.
Snapping out of her shock, Gu Qili quickly checked on Chen Yishu’s injuries. A lot of the soup had splashed onto his back, soaking through his T-shirt, still steaming, and when she lightly touched him, he hissed in pain, although he tried to endure it, he couldn’t hide the expression of agony.
His skin was probably already peeling off.
Without another word, she immediately took out her phone and called 120 (emergency services).
Soon, the ambulance arrived in a hurry, and Chen Yishu’s classmates helped the doctors lift him into the vehicle. Gu Qili quickly followed and got in, while Hu Jiaojiao wanted to come along but was fiercely shoved away by Mickey, causing her to stumble and fall to the ground.
As the ambulance siren wailed into the distance, she couldn’t bother with anything else and clambered up, running to the side of the road to hail a cab.
The Chen Family had some connections with the hospital; Chen Yishu’s aunt worked there as the logistics director, so he quickly received the most effective treatment, with the burn specialist summoned by his aunt.
Despite the timely arrival, the doctor said the burns on his back were still a cause for concern. They planned to start with conservative treatment, and if the recovery was not satisfactory, they would consider skin grafting later on.
The ward needed to be quiet, and most of his classmates were persuaded to leave. Gu Qili stubbornly stayed behind, and while Chen Yishu’s aunt initially wanted her to go as well, with Chen Yishu insisting, she didn’t say much more. After leaving a few instructions, she went off to attend to her duties.
Only the two of them were left in the ward. Gu Qili sat on the stool at the bedside, rubbing her hands uneasily, the smell of disinfectant and burn ointment filling the room, amplifying her guilt, to the extent that she didn’t even dare to lift her head to look at Chen Yishu’s current state.
Suddenly, her fingertips were warmed, and a half-cup of hot water was pushed into her palm. She looked up in mild surprise, and Chen Yishu’s smiling face magnified before her eyes.
Due to the burns on his back, his upper body was wound with gauze, leaving one shoulder exposed; it must be from regular workouts, as his arms looked strong but not overly bulky, tanned healthily, a perfect match for his handsome and sunny face.
