Chapter 437: Chapter 283: Murder Scene
“Yu Lang, stop!” the Maid was thrown to the ground by Chai Xuanyi, desperately clinging to his legs.
Their shrill screams roused He Yan and Yu Lang from their light slumber. The two had been busy kissing earlier and hadn’t drunk much; the loud noise easily woke them from their mild stupor.
As they opened their eyes, they saw blood everywhere and Chai Xuanyi, radiating a murderous aura. They became even more alert, but felt weak and near powerless. Their position behind Chai Xuanyi made them hard to spot, so after exchanging a glance of horror, they quietly lay still, waiting for the effects of the sedatives to fade.
“Lord Chai… if you have any grievances, take my life instead, please spare him!” Bai Ru was severely injured, losing blood rapidly. She had exerted herself too much and now felt her body’s warmth draining swiftly. If Chai Xuanyi was set on killing, even if she could block him a few more times, Dou Chengfeng would still likely meet his death.
Chai Xuanyi, uninterested in her ramblings, forcefully freed himself from his Maid, strode forward, and yanked Bai Ru away.
Bai Ru, struggling, crawled to Chai Xuanyi’s feet, tightly grasping the hem of his robe, “Lord Chai, I beg you to spare him.”
“I spare him, but who spares me? Get out of the way!” Chai Xuanyi was not a heartless man; though he was intent on killing, he did not wish to slaughter the innocent. He had seen Bai Ru a few times and thought of her as merely a pitiful person.
However bad Dou Chengfeng might have been, and however much he had chilled Bai Ru’s heart, she could not bear to watch him die.
He Yan and Yu Lang were frightened. They also knew why Chai Xuanyi wanted to kill Dou Chengfeng, having been part of the group that forced Chai Xuanyi to consume Opium, also providing the drugs themselves. They couldn’t guarantee that after killing Dou Chengfeng, Chai Xuanyi wouldn’t kill them next.
With this thought, a bit of strength returned to their limp bodies. They exchanged a glance and struggled to their feet.
The terrified Maid stood aside and, seeing the two men wobble to their feet, cried out in haste, “Yu Lang, they are awake!”
Chai Xuanyi, hearing this, turned around, and realizing the situation, noted that He Yan and Yu Lang hadn’t drunk much, but Dou Chengfeng had consumed a large bowl of wine laced with sedatives and would not awaken any time soon, while Bai Ru was on her last breath. He thus decided to abandon killing Dou Chengfeng first.
He Yan and Yu Lang were terrified when they saw Chai Xuanyi turn back.
Seeing they couldn’t stop Chai Xuanyi, one of his Maids clenched her teeth and moved forward to help him. One stayed back to guard Dou Chengfeng and Bai Ru, while the other followed him towards He Yan and Yu Lang.
Seeing Chai Xuanyi had a weapon and their strength had not fully recovered, He Yan gave Yu Lang a meaningful look. Having been together for many years, they easily understood each other’s intentions.
Just as Chai Xuanyi was about three or four feet away, both men suddenly dropped lower and grabbed his legs. Chai Xuanyi, caught off guard by the sudden assault from two grown men, lost his balance and toppled backward.
He Yan, being the stronger, saw an opportunity and reached for the knife in Chai Xuanyi’s hand.
The Maid by the side, seeing her master at a disadvantage, immediately rushed to help. Although a woman and not very strong, she could not impact He Yan significantly by hitting him. Seeing Chai Xuanyi’s knife about to be snatched away, in desperation, she bit down fiercely on He Yan’s wrist.
He Yan, feeling the pain, did not let go but instead used even greater force to wrest Chai Xuanyi’s wrist. Yu Lang, who was pinning down Chai Xuanyi, saw He Yan under attack, reached for a stone beside him. There was a person between him and the Maid, making it hard to hit her, so in a harsh decision, he threw the stone at Chai Xuanyi’s forehead.
Even though the strike was not powerful, it was enough to daze Chai Xuanyi momentarily.
He Yan managed to seize the knife. Seeing Chai Xuanyi half-unconscious, he did not develop killing thoughts. But Chai Xuanyi’s Maid, unaware, thought he had taken the knife to kill her master and clung tenaciously to him.
Yu Lang rushed forward to help, and the three of them scuffled together until the Maid screamed and her body went limp.
He Yan was horrified, looking down at the knife lodged in the Maid’s chest, his face turning deathly pale.
Yu Lang was also stunned. After a moment, he managed to say, “Do not fear, He Yan, she was but a lowly Maid, even killing her is no great crime.”
Just as He Yan was coming to his senses and they were about to get up, there was a ‘bang,’ and He Yan felt a blunt pain in the back of his head, followed by a warm flow trickling down from the back of his head.
