The Third Return of the Necrotic Magic Armiger Chapter 9

The once peaceful Heaven’s Garden orphanage stirred with newfound chaos.

"Did you hear? There's a new kid here," whispered a boy no older than ten.

"Really? Let’s go see him before the others find out," his friend replied, eyes gleaming with curiosity.

The rumor spread like wildfire on a dry summer's day.

Within minutes, children of all ages gathered around the nursery window, eyes peeking in with eager anticipation. Inside, a maid gently cradled a baby—barely two or three months old—while toddlers played quietly nearby.

"Back to your rooms, all of you. You’ll scare the little ones," came a stern voice. An older woman appeared, shooing the crowd away like a swarm of mosquitoes. The children scattered, grumbling.

“This happens every time a new one arrives,” she muttered under her breath, adjusting her apron. “I best speak with the director.”

Moments later, she stepped into the director’s modest office. The old man behind the desk barely glanced up, his attention buried in a mountain of paperwork.

“Excuse me, sir. I need to ask—”

“I knew you'd come, Mrs. Suzie,” he said, cutting her off with a faint chuckle. “Let me guess—about the new arrival?”

"You’re getting scarily good at this,” she smiled.

“It’s not magic,” he replied with a grin. “You’ve been doing the same thing for the past fifteen years.”

Suzie blushed slightly, tucking a stray hair behind her ear. “Can’t help it. It’s practically tradition now.”

They shared a soft laugh, a moment of calm amid the storm of change.

“So, who is he?” Suzie asked, her tone more serious now. “Where did he come from?”

The director’s smile faded. He reached for a glass of water, then answered slowly. “His name is Evan. I found him at our doorstep early this morning.”

Suzie raised an eyebrow. “Ah, another case of ‘dump the child and disappear,’ huh?”

“Not quite.” The director sighed. “His parents left a note. They were in danger and left him here for his safety. They promised to return once things calmed down.”

Suzie nodded solemnly. “Let’s hope they keep their word.”

As she left to return to her duties, the director stared out the window at the children playing in the garden.

“If they don’t come back… he’ll be truly alone.”

Fifteen years passed like fleeting dreams.

Evan, once a newborn cradled in uncertain arms, had grown into a quiet teenager—fifteen years old and still an orphan.

During these years, Heaven’s Garden transformed. Thanks to a generous fund left behind anonymously—though in truth, by Evan’s parents—the orphanage thrived. Nobles, eager to polish their reputations, d freely, elevating the once-humble place to a sanctuary of prestige.

But joy is never without shadows.

Whispers filled the Dragon Kingdom. Jake and Jenny Windstone—names once unknown—became infamous. Accused of attempting to sell secrets to a rival kingdom, they were intercepted mid-escape. The confrontation turned violent, ending with both parents reportedly slain.

The director recognized the names.

The pendant Evan had worn as a baby—one side engraved with “Evan,” the other with “Windstone”—confirmed what he had long suspected. But the truth was too dangerous. If the world learned of Evan’s bloodline, he would be judged by his parents’ sins, not his own.

So, he buried the truth along with the pendant.

From that moment on, the child was simply Evan. No surname. No family.

Evan grew up like most children, but there was always something… off.

At three, he began having strange dreams—visions of swords, magic, battles. Nightmares that left him in tears. A caretaker dismissed them as the result of too much TV.

At five, a psychiatrist reassured the staff that children often imagined wild things. They blamed cartoons and manga, and banned both from Evan’s routine. The dreams stopped.

But they returned when he turned twelve.

This time, Evan told no one. He feared being blamed again.

His personality shifted. Friends drifted away. He became a loner, preferring books and quiet corners over games and laughter.

He rarely spoke. He rarely smiled.

Adults found him polite but eerily silent—an emotionless doll. Some tried to adopt him, but each returned him within days. They all said the same thing:

“He screams in his sleep. Then goes silent. Every night.”

Over time, Evan stopped trying. He accepted that he would not be chosen.

On his fifteenth birthday, Evan made a request that shocked the director.

“I want to live alone.”

The director refused at first. But after reflecting on Evan’s condition and years of isolation, he relented—on one condition.

Evan would live in an apartment owned by the director’s friend in Lumina City. He’d receive a monthly allowance until he turned eighteen. He had to study, stay away from alcohol and cigarettes, and remain under adult supervision.

Break the rules, and he’d be brought back immediately.

Evan agreed without hesitation.

He said goodbye to the orphanage—the only home he’d ever known—and to the few people who might miss him.

Within days, he left the city.

His past was sealed, and his future unwritten.
