Thronebreaker: The One Who Devours Names Chapter 29

Chapter 29: Chapter 29 – The Name She Carved in Blood

The mist thickened as Raen and Keir crossed the edge of the Shattered Valley. Ashveil moved beside them, silent but tense. The winds spoke in broken whispers, like voices trying to remember how to scream.

Keir squinted ahead. "Something's off. Even for this nightmare of a realm."

Raen nodded. "I feel it too. Like something familiar is watching us."

That's when the wind stilled.

And a voice spoke behind them.

"Raen... you came back to me."

Raen froze.

Keir turned, hand on his sword, but it was Raen who reacted first. His breath caught, body tense—not with fear, but something older. Regret. Guilt. Rage.

She stood beneath the broken moonlight, barefoot on glass-like water. Her dress was soaked in crimson—not fresh blood, but memory made flesh. Her eyes shimmered violet, unnatural and beautiful. Hair like threads of nightfall.

"Sarael."

The name left his lips like a curse.

She smiled.

"Oh, Raen... You remember."

Keir leaned toward Raen. "Friend of yours?"

Raen didn't answer.

Because he remembered.

The orphanage in the Ashreach Mountains. The blood pact. The whispers of gods they were never meant to hear. He remembered her fingers tracing runes onto his skin when they were just children, saying they were soul-bound. He remembered the fire.

He remembered leaving her behind.

"You died," he said.

Sarael tilted her head. "No. You died, Raen. Over and over. But I waited. I stitched my soul together from the pieces you left me. And now look... I'm whole again. For you."

Keir stepped forward. "Okay, no offense, but she's got big 'stab you while hugging' energy."

Sarael giggled. "You're cute. I'll kill you last."

Ashveil moved between them, flame mist swirling.

Raen held up a hand. "Sarael. Don't do this."

Her smile cracked. "Don't do this?" Her voice rose, trembled. "You named me, Raen. You said you'd never forget. That we'd burn the sky together. Then you left me to die."

He flinched.

"I didn't have a choice."

"You always had a choice!" she screamed. "And now I do too."

She raised her hand.

And the world screamed.

Blood bloomed from the ground, forming sigils older than gods. The sky split—not by light, but by memory. Broken fragments of the past rained down, sharp as blades.

Keir swore. "She's a Godmarked—no, worse. She's unwritten."

Raen's eyes widened.

That power—it wasn't divine. It was broken divinity. Like her soul had clawed its way back from the void and rewritten its own rules.

Sarael stepped forward. "Let's play, Raen. Like we used to. Before you abandoned me."

Her blade was a ribbon of bone and sorrow.

Raen called Silence Between to his hand. "Then let's finish what we started."

---

The clash was immediate.

Sarael moved like a memory undone—too fast, too erratic. Her strikes weren't just physical; they tore through Raen's thoughts. Every time her blade touched his, images burst behind his eyes.

Herself. Laughing in the snow.

Herself. Burning with rage.

Herself. Standing over bodies, waiting for him to return.

Ashveil charged, conjuring a shield of flame-mist—but Sarael bent it with a gesture. "No lies between us, pet."

Keir tried to flank her. She whispered his name—just once—and he collapsed, shaking.

"She knows my true name," he gasped.

"She's feeding on truths," Raen growled. "She's not just remembering. She's weaponizing the past."

He changed tactics.

He didn't fight her.

He remembered with her.

Every cut he took, he let it remind him. Of nights under stolen stars. Of promises they carved into tree bark. Of the first time they killed together.

Her attacks slowed.

"I waited," she whispered. "I killed them all. For you."

"I didn't ask you to."

"You didn't have to!"

Her blade faltered.

Raen lowered his.

"Sarael... if you want to kill me, then kill me. But this version of you? It's not you. It's what they turned you into."

She trembled.

Then stabbed him.

Not fatally. Just enough to make him bleed.

Then she kissed him.

It was bitter. Sweet. Unforgiving.

And then she whispered, "I won't kill you yet. But I'll break you. So when you do need me... you'll mean it."

And with that, she vanished into the cracks of the world.

---

Raen staggered.

Ashveil caught him.

Keir stood, pale. "Okay. New rule. No more ex-girlfriends."

Raen didn't laugh.

He was staring at something on his palm.

A symbol.

Newly carved.

In blood.

[Echo Mutation Acquired – Fragment of the Forsaken Flame]

It pulsed with her memory.

And her love.

And her madness.

---

[Cliffhanger Ending]

That night, Raen dreamed of her.

In the dream, she stood over a burning throne.

His throne.

She turned to him.

And said: "When the gods fall, I will wear your name like a crown."

Raen woke with a start.

And saw a message scrawled into the stone beside his bed.

"You belong to me. See you in three nights."
