Madeleine glanced out the window, saw that they had reached their destination, stuffed her phone into her bag, turned her head, and said to Howard, “I’m getting off.”
Howard was still immersed in the words Madeleine spoke over the phone and showed no response to her words.
Seeing that Howard remained silent for a long time, Madeleine lowered her eyes, hiding the disappointment in them, and said to the driver in front, “Goodbye.” Then she pushed the car door open and got out and left.
By the time Howard snapped back to reality, the driver had already driven off toward the apartment where he lived. The woman who had been sitting by his side had left without his knowledge.
Howard turned his head and stared at the spot where Madeleine had just been sitting, zoning out once again.

The day after Andrew Henris finished his call with Madeleine, he really flew from Oceania to Ciawell.
