Howard Coleman thought about this, and his eyes began to feel warm.
If she was so determined to love him, why couldn’t she love him for a longer period.
As Howard reflected on this, he couldn’t help but raise his hand and rub his face. When he lowered his hand, he saw through the bright mirror that someone was standing beside him. He froze for a moment before turning his head and staring straight at the man.
After washing his hands, Andrew Henris noticed the man beside him staring and, although somewhat perplexed, still offered Howard a polite smile. He pulled a paper towel, wiped his hands, and walked away.
Howard waited until Andrew had been gone for a while before he turned, stepped out of the restroom, and exited through the back door of the Summer Palace. Instinctively, he looked for Madeleine’s car only to find it gone, and he stood there, slightly dazed, for a moment before walking to his own car. He opened the door and got in.
When Howard drove back to the city center, night had just fallen, and despite not having had lunch, he didn’t feel the least bit hungry.
He didn’t want to go home, yet he didn’t know where else to go. Feeling exhausted, he eventually stopped when he passed by a SPA Shop he frequented. After a moment’s thought, he parked his car and stepped inside.
The manager happened to be in the lobby and greeted Howard with a warm smile as soon as he saw him, “Mr. Coleman, why did you come today without calling in advance?”
Howard tugged at his lips but said nothing.
The manager signaled someone to prepare tea for Howard while leading him to a private room, “Mr. Coleman, would you like the same treatments as before?”
Howard nodded once, still silent. He removed his shirt and lay down on the bed.
The beautician that usually performed Howard’s SPA treatments was busy with other clients, so the manager sent another beautician, a very pretty and young one. She appeared slightly timid when looking at Howard, but her technique was good and strong. The essential oil in her palms slowly penetrated his skin, helping Howard to relax both body and mind.
The private room was very quiet, and the two didn’t engage in much conversation.
After finishing with Howard’s back, the beautician noticed he had his eyes closed and seemed asleep. She quietly got a hot towel to wipe off the excess oil from his back and covered him with a blanket.
Howard was half-asleep and when he felt the pressure on his back cease, he opened his eyes and asked in a somewhat low voice, “Is it done?”
“Yes, Mr. Coleman,” the beautician replied softly.
Without a word, Howard threw off the blanket, sat up, and pointed to the shirt on the hanger, then picked up a cup of water from the side and started drinking.
The beautician understood what Howard meant, walked over, took his shirt, and handed it to him.
As Howard took his shirt and started putting it on, the beautician remembered the scar she had seen on his shoulder while giving him the back treatment. Knowing she shouldn’t ask, she couldn’t help but inquire, “Mr. Coleman, the scar on your back… Is it from a knife wound? It looks quite severe.”
