Han YunXi was packing in her room while others were already starting their holiday. She, on the other hand, was about to head to the countryside to volunteer for about half a month. The place was said to be remote, but there would be teachers around, which should offer some level of safety.
Still, since HuMing rarely came home, it didn’t feel right to let Han YunXi go to a place like that on her own.
This was a sensitive time, and he didn’t want any trouble.
Besides, there had been a wave of anti-fraud campaigns airing constantly on TV, and the news was full of stories about people being trafficked overseas.
If one wasn’t careful, they could easily end up suffering.
Also, Lan Jun’s side situation hadn’t been fully resolved yet—the bank needed to complete a series of verifications, which would take some time.
So for now, HuMing’s schedule was relatively open.
Inside the room, Han YunXi was putting her daily necessities into her suitcase. She didn’t plan to wear skirts or anything too eye-catching out there—mostly practical items like long sleeves, jackets, and two bottles of mosquito repellent, in case she couldn’t sleep from all the bites at night.
“YunXi, dinner’s ready!”
HuMing’s voice came from outside. Han YunXi paused what she was doing and turned to open the door.
There stood HuMing in an apron, the scent of food wafting off him.
“Alright, I’ll be down in a sec.”
Whether at the Han family or the Gu family, it was rare to see HuMing cook. But tonight, he did it himself because Han LiTian and his wife had gone out and wouldn’t return until the evening, and the family’s chef had taken leave to visit his grandson.
Originally, Han YunXi had suggested just ordering takeout. But HuMing offered to cook something simple for the two of them instead.
She was surprised at first—since when did HuMing enjoy cooking? Just a while ago, she’d even secretly peeked into the kitchen to see him grilling steak.
“Want steak? I’ll grill some for you.”
And so, their meal was settled. While Han YunXi continued packing upstairs, HuMing cooked downstairs.
When she finally came down, she found HuMing sitting at the table. In front of him was a beautifully plated steak, with a side of pasta to fill them up.
It looked good enough to rival something from a western restaurant.
“HuMing, did your trip to the Gu family teach you how to plate food too? It looks really good.”
“Not just the looks—the taste is great too.”
HuMing looked at her expectantly, clearly waiting for a reaction of satisfaction from her.
Han YunXi took her seat, picked up the knife and fork, and cut a piece of steak to try.
“How did you manage to cook it so tenderly, without a trace of blood?”
“Just followed some online guides. But honestly, I think it’s time I start honing my skills—for my future!”
Hearing that, Han YunXi froze. She turned to him, looking both surprised and confused.
“HuMing, you’ve already decided what you want to do in the future?”
“Yeah! I want to be a househusband—live off my wife, use my wife’s money!” HuMing looked proud of his dream.
He really had, just like HuMin said, figured out his direction long ago.
Though, his dream happened to be one that many people fantasize about.
Han YunXi’s mouth opened slightly, at a loss for words. She’d thought HuMing had grand ambitions—but to think he wanted to freeload?
She looked at him helplessly, then shook her head with a small sigh and changed the subject.
“I heard from XiaoXi that you’ve been doing really well at school. They’re planning to give you a scholarship. Grades should be out soon, right? Are you confident you’ll be number one again?”
“It’s not that I choose first place—first place chooses me. Besides, no matter how well I do in school, it doesn’t guarantee I’ll succeed in the real world. Honestly, I just want to slack off at home, play games all day—that sounds pretty nice.”
Han YunXi thought this topic needed to stop before he dragged her thinking down with him.
She lowered her head and kept eating the steak, but her mind wandered back to the topic of him coming with her to the countryside.
HuMing hadn’t been to those kinds of places in years. Would he really be okay there? He’d only just gotten used to life at the Gu family, and now he was going to be thrown into a completely different environment.
If this were before, Han YunXi would’ve assumed he wouldn’t be able to handle it and would start complaining about wanting to leave.
But now, she was genuinely considering things for his sake.
She hoped HuMing would stay home and spend more time with his parents.
After everything that had happened with Han ShuYi, they were already emotionally exhausted.
They needed emotional support more than anything.
“HuMing, maybe… you shouldn’t go with me. I think it’d be better if you stayed home. There are a lot of mosquitoes over there, and the living conditions aren’t great. There’s no need for you to go and suffer through that.”
HuMing swallowed the steak in his mouth, his expression unchanged as he listened to her.

He simply wanted to make it up to her.
“A place like that isn’t a big deal for me. Before I went to the Gu family, I survived alone on a deserted island for a week.”
“…Wait, that’s how the Gu family brought you in?” Han YunXi’s eyes widened, clearly upset.
But before she could say more, HuMing quickly explained.
“It’s just part of their rules. When in Rome, right? All the other Gu family kids went through the same thing. Nothing to be shocked about.”
“It’s not about being shocked—it’s about safety! What if something had happened to you? Would the Gu family take responsibility for that?”
At this point, even HuMing didn’t dare continue. If she found out he’d nearly been assassinated, she’d probably flip the table.
“Come on, that’s all in the past. Don’t worry so much. Let’s eat before it gets cold.”
Suddenly, the air between them felt chilly.
Maybe because Han YunXi was still stuck on the issue, her brows remained furrowed the whole time, lost in thought.
The meal passed quickly. HuMing was just about to clean up the dishes when Han YunXi stopped him.
“I’ll do it. You go rest.”
She took the plates from his hands and walked straight into the kitchen.
But HuMing could sense it—Han YunXi seemed upset.
