The National Day holiday is just around the corner, and although we don’t get a seven-day break here in Harbor City, including the weekends, it’s a three-day mini vacation.
Zhang Li and Yang Xue discussed and decided to spend a day strolling in Macau to see what the gambling city was like.
Then they’d spend the next two days eating delicious food in Yangcheng, which also counted as a little trip.
The two were deciding what time to get up the next day; travel was quick, and since they weren’t gambling, after some thought, they settled on sleeping in.
As they were discussing, someone stood in front of them, "Zhang Li."
Zhang Li looked up at the person and quickly retrieved his information from the original host’s memory; he was Wei Yan’s most capable secretary.
He was very competent, handling many of Wei Yan’s business and personal matters, "Hello, and you are?"
Yang Xue stared at the man perplexed, able to call out Zhang Li’s name, yet she didn’t recognize him.
"I’m the secretary of your biological father, our boss would like to talk to you," the secretary wanted to take Zhang Li to the hotel.
Her biological father’s secretary? Yang Xue originally thought that if Zhang Li’s biological father was poor, he would exploit her, but it turned out he was a wealthy man.
Don’t ask how she knew; are people with secretaries poor?
Had Wei Yan already come to Harbor City? Zhang Li was really annoyed; it was almost National Day holiday, and she was looking forward to going out and having fun.
And now a certain irritating person had to show up, "Biological father?"
"I don’t understand what you’re talking about?"
"And you say you are my biological father’s secretary; just because you say so, doesn’t mean it’s true. Do you have any proof?"
"What evidence is there to prove he’s my father? My parents died when I was in my first year of high school."
Zhang Li had no intention of meeting Wei Yan; she really disliked his condescending attitude.
The original host had hoped to have family again, but as for the Wei family members being her relatives, Zhang Li couldn’t have been more disdainful.
"My boss is the President of Wei’s." The secretary hadn’t planned on revealing the Wei family just yet.
But seeing Zhang Li’s demeanor, which firmly suggested she wouldn’t follow, he had no choice but to mention Wei Yan.
The President of Wei’s? Yang Xue was stunned, looking at the man in disbelief, "The Wei’s I’m thinking of?"
No way, it never crossed her mind that her friend was Miss Wei of the Wei Family.
Yang Xue abruptly remembered what she’d previously whispered in Zhang Li’s ear, and her expression inevitably stiffened.
The secretary haughtily nodded, "Yes, that Wei’s."
Zhang Li uttered an "Oh," "So it’s Wei’s, to me, it’s still a stranger."
What? The secretary had thought that having said all that, Zhang Li would happily follow him.
But contrary to his expectations, Zhang Li said what she did, which was a far cry from what he had anticipated. The secretary immediately felt this task was going to be tricky.
Before setting out, he had thought it was a minor task that would be easily resolved.
Zhang Li grabbed Yang Xue and left. After a few steps, the latter came to her senses, "Xiao Li, that’s Wei’s."
"So what if it’s Wei’s? For such a wealthy family, if a child was switched at birth, shouldn’t they have realized it much earlier?"
"It’s been almost twenty years, and they’re just discovering it now, just realizing it?"
"No matter how I think about it, there seems to be a problem."
"Even if I were their child, perhaps they only learned I was admitted to Harbor City University, that I had prospects, and might be someone who could contribute to the Wei family in some way?"
"Or do you think I could enter into a marital alliance?"
"I’m doing just fine on my own now, living a good life. Why would I bother to acknowledge them, assuming they are indeed my parents?"
"And as for the wealthy family, they value traditions and etiquette, don’t they? As a child from a humble family, I don’t understand any of that. Why would I go back just to be laughed at?"
"Why would I waste my time in that wealthy family when I could be free?"
"Am I without food to eat, without an education to receive, or without a future to speak of? My future is certainly not bleak."
"I think maintaining the status quo is good."
"They are big bosses, their word is law, and I’m not the kind of obedient child they’d want. I can tell we’d be incompatible at first glance."
"To avoid driving them to their graves with frustration, I’d rather not acknowledge them. Otherwise, if something goes wrong, it’ll be my responsibility."
Zhang Li stated that she definitely couldn’t bear such a responsibility.
The secretary caught up quickly and tried to persuade Zhang Li again, but he hadn’t expected to overhear these words.
The secretary couldn’t help but be stunned. He’d never thought someone would actually despise the constraints of a wealthy family.
After all, many people would do anything to get into a wealthy family. Like Miss Wei, Wei Wei—wasn’t she scheming by all means to stay with the Wei Family?
The secretary remembered that for Wei Wei, Wei Xudong had an unpleasant conflict with Wei Yan.
The secretary stopped in his tracks and didn’t follow any further. He knew that even if he found Zhang Li again, she wouldn’t follow him. She was a person with her own opinions.
What the secretary left unsaid was that the look Zhang Li gave him made him feel oppressed.
It felt like Wei Yan was staring at him, no, the pressure was even greater than when Wei Yan looked at him.
The secretary wiped the sweat from his brow. Forget it, this really wasn’t something he could decide. He’d better go back and discuss it with the boss, and let the boss consider what to do next.
The secretary got into the car parked on the side, "Back to the hotel."
Upon hearing his order, the driver started the car and headed towards the hotel.
On the way back, the secretary closed his eyes, deep in thought, while the driver remained quiet throughout the drive, his own mind far from calm.
Although Wei Yan didn’t visit Harbor City often, the driver had seen the big boss before.
When he saw the person the secretary was looking for, the driver was flabbergasted. She looked so much like Wei Yan that anyone would say they were father and daughter.
But the driver also knew what Wei Yan’s daughter looked like, and it definitely wasn’t the girl from today.
A thought suddenly struck the driver. Although it was said that the boss adored his wife, now that there was a girl so similar to the boss, the driver began to suspect Wei Yan was a master actor.
He played the loving husband so convincingly that the driver wouldn’t dare to whisper even in his innermost thoughts, much less speak out loud.
If he carelessly said something he shouldn’t, and it led to an investigation, would he still have good days ahead?
The secretary typed several drafts, all in hopes of not angering Wei Yan to death.
As Wei Yan’s secretary, he knew the boss seemed approachable, receptive to all kinds of suggestions. Yet, in reality, suggestions were just that, and many issues were not taken into consideration.
Only if the idea could reduce costs or increase sales would Wei Yan pay attention and give directives.
If it meant increasing expenses, Wei Yan would simply skip over them without giving it another thought.
Recalling Zhang Li’s evaluation of Wei Yan, the secretary could only agree that it was very apt; the man was indeed authoritarian.
The decisions he made were not to be defied, and now Zhang Li was giving him no face at all.
Not knowing just how much she had missed out on, the secretary felt that Zhang Li simply didn’t understand the extent of the Wei Family’s assets. Once she knew, she would definitely not maintain this attitude.
