Tycoon Actor in Hollywood Chapter 350

The official filming for "Whiplash" was set to begin in a few days, following intense rehearsals that had honed the cast's performances to a razor's edge.

In the writers' room, Lucas, Damien, and J.K. were huddled around a table, dissecting the script and debating the characters' motivations. The air was thick with creative tension as they grappled with the film's weighty themes.

Lucas leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his hair. "You know, I can't help but feel for Andrew. He essentially becomes the next Charlie Parker, but at what cost?"

Damien nodded, a hint of resignation in his voice. "I get it. But sometimes, the most impactful endings aren't the happiest ones. We need that gut punch to really drive the message home."

"Agreed," J.K. chimed in, his brow furrowed. "Though I can't help but wonder - would Andrew have achieved the same results without Fletcher's influence?"

Lucas considered this for a moment. "Maybe. But Andrew sees Fletcher as this twisted father figure, right? He's been so thoroughly humiliated that he starts to believe the abuse is actually pushing him towards greatness. It's all about winning Fletcher's approval."

Damien leaned forward, his eyes intense. "You're right. Fletcher's a manipulative bastard. He doesn't care about music - he just wants to create another Charlie Parker. He's driving Andrew to prioritize art above everything else, and look what it costs him."

"Fletcher's a master manipulator," Lucas added, his voice tinged with frustration. "He believes genius is made, not born, and he's been conditioning people long before Andrew came along. All those miserable musicians he's left in his wake... That's why part of me wants to change the ending. I don't want Fletcher to win."

A slow smile spread across Damien's face. "So, what are you thinking? As Andrew, do you see a way we can still make our point without letting Fletcher have the last laugh?"

Lucas grinned, a spark of excitement in his eyes. "I'm not sure yet. But I have a feeling it'll come to me as we're filming. Sometimes you've got to live in a character's skin to really understand their choices."

Damien patted Lucas on the shoulder, his expression thoughtful. "Well, if you think Andrew deserves a better ending, just talk to me. After all, you're the one living in Andrew's skin, not me."

Lucas chuckled, gesturing towards Damien. "You're the director, though."

Damien shrugged, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "Indeed I am. But I can see you've got a way of getting into Andrew's head that's... well, special. You probably know more about his choices than any of us at this point. So yeah, feel free to improvise. The film might feel more natural if you, as Andrew, act out the ending in a way that feels true to the character."

J.K. suddenly piped up, his tone playfully blunt. "You're not giving him that kind of directorial power just because he's Lucas Knight, are you?"

Damien's ears flushed pink. "Of- of course not," he stammered.

Lucas grinned mischievously. "Oh, I see what's happening here. Smart career move, Damien. Butter up the popular actor, and next time you've got a project, you can give me a call. Is that it?"

Damien's head whipped towards Lucas, his eyes wide. "Hey, you know that's not how it is!"

Even though Damien knew Lucas and J.K. were just pulling his leg, he felt compelled to explain himself. The room erupted in laughter, the tension from their earlier discussion dissipating.

Time passed, and the first day of filming finally arrived. Lucas stepped onto the set early in the morning, ready to begin. He wore a simple white shirt that subtly highlighted his toned physique, drawing a few appreciative glances from some of the women crew members.

Lucas took his place behind the drum kit, the cameras already positioned around him. Damien approached, a mix of excitement and nervous energy in his eyes.

"Ready?" Damien asked.

Lucas met his gaze steadily. "Ready whenever you are."

Damien nodded, then turned to address the crew. "Alright, everyone, positions please." He gestured towards one of the lights. "Can we adjust that? It seems a bit off."

After a couple of minutes of final adjustments, Damien called out, "Okay, here we go. Three, two, one. Action!"

Lucas began to play, his hands moving swiftly and precisely over the drums. The opening scene required him to perform a solo piece, demonstrating Andrew's skill and dedication right from the start. Lucas lost himself in the rhythm.

As Lucas continued playing, J.K., fully embodying Fletcher, entered the scene. His presence immediately shifted the atmosphere on set.

Noticing J.K., Lucas abruptly stopped drumming and stood up, his body language transforming into that of a nervous student. "Sorry," he stammered, "I didn't know someone was here."

J.K. raised a hand, his voice authoritative yet deceptively calm. "No, no, stay. Stay."

Lucas slowly sat back down, his eyes never leaving J.K. There was a palpable tension in the air, perfectly capturing Andrew's mix of anxiety and anticipation.

"What's your name?" J.K. asked, his tone neutral but somehow intimidating.

"Andrew Nieman, sir," Lucas replied, his voice steady but with an undercurrent of nervousness.

"Fir-first year, sir," Lucas stuttered, his eyes flickering between J.K. and the floor.

His performance beautifully conveyed Andrew's conflicting emotions - the fear of facing the infamous, ruthless teacher, but also a hint of excitement at the opportunity to showcase his skills to the school's renowned studio band conductor.

From behind the camera, Damien watched the scene unfold with growing respect. He'd known Lucas was talented - his reputation in Hollywood for disappearing into roles was well-established and growing by the day. But seeing it up close, watching Lucas transform so completely into Andrew, was something else entirely.

"Do you know who I am?" J.K. asked, his face a mask of indifference.

"Yes, sir," Lucas nodded, a hint of nervous excitement in his voice.

"You know I'm looking for players?"

J.K.'s eyebrows raised slightly. "Then why did you stop playing?"

At this, Lucas visibly steeled himself, his posture straightening as he turned back to the drums. Without a word, he launched into an intense rhythm, the sound filling the room with a palpable energy.

As he played, Lucas could feel his own heart rate increasing, perfectly mirroring Andrew's nervous excitement. His hands moved with precision and speed, each beat a desperate attempt to impress Fletcher. In his mind, he - as Andrew - was already imagining Fletcher's reaction:

"You did very well, son. Do you want to be part of the band?"

The hope and anticipation were clear on Lucas's face as he played, his eyes occasionally darting to J.K., seeking any sign of approval. The intensity of his performance was captivating, drawing everyone on set into Andrew's world of ambition and anxiety.

J.K., for his part, maintained Fletcher's stoic facade, watching Lucas with an unreadable expression that only added to the tension of the scene.

The rolling cameras captured every nuance of Lucas's performance, his face a canvas of growing excitement and anticipation.

It was reminiscent of a child eagerly showing off to their parents, hoping for praise and approval.

Some crew members couldn't help but smile at Lucas's portrayal of Andrew's eagerness. His performance perfectly embodied the "Eager Beaver" nickname he'd earned on set, as he threw himself into the drumming with unbridled enthusiasm.

As Lucas finished playing, he looked directly at J.K., his eyes shining with pride and confidence in the skills he had just displayed.

J.K. observed Lucas's expression, noting how it contrasted with the nervousness Andrew had shown earlier.

Through Fletcher's eyes, this display of confidence wasn't impressive - it was despicable. Fletcher saw only overconfidence where Andrew hoped to show talent.

"Did I tell you to start playing again?" J.K. said coldly, initiating Fletcher's manipulation.

Lucas's face fell, his earlier assurance visibly crumbling. "I thought... Sorry, I misun-" he stammered, his confidence slipping away rapidly.

J.K. pressed on, his voice sharp. "I asked you why you stopped playing. Your version of an answer was to turn into a wind-up drummer monkey."

"I'm sorry -- I--I stopped playing becau-" Lucas tried to explain, but J.K. cut him off again, not allowing him to finish.

Lucas's expression conveyed Andrew's growing confusion and distress as he faced Fletcher's unexpected reaction. The realization that his performance had not impressed Fletcher as he'd hoped was slowly dawning on him, and it showed in every subtle shift of his facial expressions and body language.

The scene continued until Damien softly called out, "Cut."

With that cue, the set came alive again. Cameras stopped rolling, and both Lucas and J.K. visibly shifted out of their characters.

"Great performance, guys," Damien praised, addressing both the cast and crew before they gathered to review the footage.

As they watched the playback, Lucas couldn't help but feel a twinge of embarrassment at his portrayal of Andrew's eagerness. His face, beaming with childlike enthusiasm as he played for Fletcher, was almost comical in its intensity.

Damien, noticing Lucas's reaction, pointed to the screen with a grin. "What exactly were you thinking here, Lucas? As Andrew, to act like that?"

Lucas looked slightly concerned. "What? Is it bad?"

Damien quickly shook his head. "No, no. It actually perfectly captures Andrew's innocence. This kind of behavior will make his later manipulation by Fletcher even more impactful." He paused, his curiosity evident. "So, what was going through your mind?"

Lucas looked thoughtful, his brow furrowed slightly. "Andrew was expecting Fletcher to be impressed. That's why he looked like that when he played the drums." He paused, before adding. "He was imagining Fletcher's response would be, 'You did well, son. Do you want to be part of the band?'"

The crew, along with Damien and J.K., burst into giggles at Lucas's impression of Andrew's naive expectations.

"Not funny," Lucas protested, but he couldn't help cracking a smile.

Damien patted Lucas on the shoulder, still chuckling. "That's exactly what I imagined Andrew would think."

Lucas nodded, then his eyes lit up with an idea. "You know, what if we added scenes of Andrew's imagination? Show Fletcher praising him in his mind?"

Damien looked surprised, intrigued by the suggestion. "You mean, like, show his fantasy of Fletcher's praise, fool the audience for a moment, then hit them with the harsh reality?"

"Something like that," Lucas confirmed with a grin.

The idea had come to him suddenly, reminiscent of his work on "Joker," where they'd played with the line between Arthur's imagination and reality. It was a technique that could add an extra layer of depth to Andrew's character and heighten the impact of Fletcher's harsh treatment.

J.K. nodded approvingly. "I like it. Really drives home how crushing Fletcher's actual response is."

Damien considered for a moment, then smiled. "You know what? Let's try it. We can always cut it if it doesn't work, but I think it could be powerful."
