Chapter 5: The Bet
Following Ding Dian’s directions, the car quickly arrived at her apartment complex.
“Happy now?” she asked as she got out of the car, then turned to leave.
But Yang Yu, shameless as ever, followed her again.
Ding Dian was completely speechless. She couldn’t shake him off, and if she tried to hit him, she’d probably just end up letting him take advantage of her.
“Are you planning to come to my place for coffee now?” she said loudly.
“Really? That’s great! Since you’re inviting me, I won’t be polite!” Yang Yu said cheerfully.
Seeing her face darken, eyes glaring daggers at him, he chuckled. “Relax, I’m just kidding. Why so serious?”
“To be honest, I actually live here too. Crazy coincidence, huh?” he shrugged with a grin.
Ding Dian blinked and stared at him. “Do I have ‘idiot’ written on my face? Or ‘fool’? Who are you trying to trick?”
“I’ve lived here for years. I don’t know every neighbor, but I would’ve at least seen you before. You really think I’m that gullible?”
“Wanna bet on it?” Yang Yu smirked.
“A bet? What kind of bet?” she asked curiously.
“Let’s bet on whether I really live here or not,” he said, smiling.
Ding Dian hesitated. Could he actually live here? That didn’t seem right. She had never seen him before. He must have just moved in? No, that didn’t make sense either—no one had moved in recently.
She studied him up and down, deep in thought.
Seeing her hesitate, Yang Yu grinned. “What’s wrong? Scared? Coward.”
“Who are you calling a coward? Fine! Let’s bet. You think I’m afraid?” she snapped, knowing full well he was provoking her but refusing to back down.
“But it has to be this exact building,” she added.
“No problem,” he said easily.
“And if you’re just crashing at a friend’s place, that still counts as a loss,” she pressed.
“Agreed,” he said without hesitation.
Now Ding Dian hesitated even more.
Seeing her uncertainty, Yang Yu teased, “Same floor as you. I live right across from your place. Believe it?”
“The apartment across from mine belongs to a middle-aged couple. I literally saw them yesterday. You think I don’t know?” she said firmly.
“So, are we betting or not? Give me a straight answer,” he said arrogantly.
“What’s the wager?” she asked.
“If I lose, I’ll do anything you ask. No conditions.”
“And if I lose?” she asked cautiously.
Yang Yu dragged out his words on purpose. “Heh… well…” His eyes deliberately wandered down to her chest.
She immediately crossed her arms and glared. “Don’t push it, I’m warning you.”
“Fine… a kiss?” he suggested.
“In your dreams,” she shot back without hesitation.
“Alright, then how about I just come over for a cup of coffee and a nice chat about life?” he offered.
“Not a chance. Keep that thought out of your head. If you keep this up, I’m not betting anymore! Hmph! Stay here or don’t—I don’t care! It’s not like you’re my son. Why should I care where you live?” she huffed, starting to back out.
Her sudden outburst almost made Yang Yu spit blood.
Seeing that she was actually about to bail on the bet, he quickly backtracked. “Relax, I was joking! Why are you mad? My apologies, Your Highness!”
He even bowed in an exaggerated imitation of an ancient court eunuch.
“Pfft…” Ding Dian couldn’t hold back her laughter.
Through his observations and interactions over the past two days, Yang Yu had pretty much figured out her personality.
She was a textbook northern girl—straightforward, outspoken, sharp-tongued but soft-hearted, and incredibly proud.
With a girl like this, a little sweet talk could fix anything.
In the original storyline, after she broke up with Yu Fei, they got back together almost instantly. If Yu Fei had just admitted his mistake, they would have reconciled in no time.
For Yang Yu, saying a few nice words cost nothing.
As for pride? That didn’t matter. Winning the girl was the real victory.
It was the same with Lin Jia and Meng Yun—one assumed the other wouldn’t leave, and the other assumed they’d be stopped. But both were too proud to say anything, and in the end, they went their separate ways.
Yang Yu remembered something his college roommate once told him—something some internet genius had summed up about chasing girls:
“Be bold, be careful, and most importantly, have thick skin.”
And the thick skin was the most important part.
“If you lose, just add me on WeChat. That’s reasonable, right?” Yang Yu suggested.
“That’s fine. But if you lose, you really have to do anything I say, right? Even if I tell you to drop dead? Hahaha!” Ding Dian laughed.
“Sure. If you win, I’ll jump off the roof. Satisfied?” Yang Yu rolled his eyes.
“Great, deal!”
Since he had put it like that, how could she refuse?
