Fifteen minutes later, Huo Chen sauntered out of the kitchen with two steaming bowls and two pairs of chopsticks in his grip.
“Seafood noodle, there,” he said, passing a glance at Wen He who apparently went absent-minded as he placed the food on the table. She quickly ran to the table and sat down like a little girl at her Christmas surprise.
For some reason, it was indeed a bowl of instant noodles yet it looked pretty exquisite, as if something from the Michelin chef.
“You have scored 10/10 for everything in this bowl, sir. You’re husband material, serious!” She snickered as she licked her lips.
Like a kitten encountering a giant slice of fish, she purred cunningly “If I’m not going anywhere else, can I just stay with you like—for the rest of my life?”
“No.”
“No to the ‘no’ you’ve just said. I’m staying, regardless,” teased Wen He as she placed one scoop into her mouth.

The next moment she realized, she was looking at an empty bowl. She even drank the entire bowl of seafood soup seasoned with MSG.
“I-I’ll wash the bowls.” At the end of the meal, she offered to return the favor.

Huo Chen nodded before walking towards the computer in the other room. Just when he placed his palms over the keyboard, loud shatters were heard from the kitchen.
That sound was self-explanatory as he pinched his forehead and walked to the kitchen again. The clumsy woman was picking up the oily shards on the floor.

“You take care of your work outside. I’ll…I’ll take a nap.” She sent him back to the study room where the computer was located. Huo Chen had to agree with her that he indeed had a number of tasks on his list. He took a final look at the kitchen all cleaned up before returning to the study room.
Wen He was on her bed. The food and the intense embarrassment that drained her brought her to sleep immediately. As she was fully relaxed in her dreams, a long and wailing sound of bell rang loudly.
It was just like the time when she was working with the organization! She hopped off the bed and sprinted her way out.
“Huo Chen!” She shouted at the man who just exited the study room nonchalantly.
“It’s just the call for meals. Were you that hungry?”
“Oh…oh I see…Well, I’m good.”
Her conditioned response was tricking her apparently. Her adrenaline boiled as she imagined there was an emergency out there.
“Okay, let’s go, shall we?” He took out a card and escorted her to the porch after requesting her to comb her messy hair.
When they got to the ground, a few lines of formally dressed soldiers marching towards the cafetaria caught their eyes.
Their expression was extremely solemn and uniform while being soaked in sweat.
Wen He shuddered upon the pressure exerted in the air as if she would be put under judgment any second of the day. Her lips shrunk as she leaned towards Huo Chen and whispered, “Hey, what did the general say when you reported in today?”
“Well, I didn’t keep you out of the camp. That’s good enough, isn’t it?”
Huo Chen suddenly noticed something was off as he glanced upon Wen He’s arm wrapping over his, “Hands off. We are in public.”
“We are both husband and wife. What’s wrong?” Wen He might have sounded fearless but she was the one with most fear in the camp since she might be the target any moment when those men aimed their rifles at her.
Huo Chen, as if sensing the undertone of her words, did not say anything further as he gestured her to carry on walking. The soldiers ate their food in an orderly fashion and at a shocking speed too. There was a rhythm in the cafeteria. Wen He could not help but constantly look around.
It was a different sight to her despite her years in the organization. They did have a cafeteria. They did have their meals together almost everyday too but never once they dined in such a way. Mealtimes, to them, were always the most relaxing and fun-filled moments of the day. People would crack jokes, hit the pipe, play games like scissors-rock-paper, tell ridiculous and obviously blowing-the-trumpet stories. Ol’ Jiu would share some adult stories while rewarding himself a fine glass of beer with salt.
They were never as serious as the soldiers. Not so mechanically, at least.
