By now, the watching students were beginning to see through Kira's tactics.
The invincible Submarineroid could slap the opponent directly, and "Megaroid City" allowed it to swap its ATK and DEF at the moment of attack, turning what should have been 800 damage into 1800.
On top of that, Submarineroid could switch to defense after attacking, and its defense was a solid 1800 DEF—making it good both offensively and defensively.
As they realized this, many students had odd looks on their faces.
None of them thought this non-confrontational, monster-dodging strategy was especially strong, but it sure was... annoying.
Even though Yuichi had just been smacked painfully by the sub, everyone still felt he had the advantage on the field—including Yuichi himself.
"Tch, just cheap tricks," Yuichi scoffed. "But this is as far as your little stunts go.
Yuichi had entered Duel Academy full of ambition. Ever since he'd learned to duel, everyone around him had treated him as a prodigy. He'd cruised through life until now. Sure, his written test was a bit weak, but he was confident that in actual duels he'd be second to none.
He set a small goal for himself: advance to Obelisk Blue Dorm in the first semester, and become freshman champion by the end of the year!
That meant beating even those elite transfer students who came straight into Obelisk Blue Dorm from middle school. If he couldn't even overcome a mere Ra Yellow's No.1, what was there to talk about?
So, in his mind, Kira was just a stepping stone, a small hurdle on his way to greater things.
Today, he would make a name for himself in Ra Yellow!
"I activate Quick-Play Spell—Mystical Space Typhoon! Destroy one Spell/Trap on the field.
I'll destroy your left set card!"
A black whirlwind whipped up, lifting one of Kira's set cards into the air and shattering it with lightning. It was a Trap Hole.
"Ha, so it was Trap Hole. Close one. If I'd recklessly summoned another monster with over 1000 ATK, I'd have been trapped."
Yuichi was quite pleased with himself for hitting the right card.
"Now I normal summon 'Ape Fighter'!"

A Level 4 monster with 1900 ATK, and it gains 300 more ATK when it destroys a monster in battle—easy to surpass 2000. It was one of his favorite strong low-level beaters.
Kira remained expressionless: "Flip Trap—Trap Hole. When a monster with over 1000 ATK is summoned, destroy it."
A dark pit opened, and before Ape Fighter could even steady itself, it fell into the abyss and exploded into pieces.
Seriously, you had a second one!?
Yuichi forced himself to accept it and continued: "Then I activate 'Monster Reborn' (anime effect) to revive a monster destroyed this turn."

"Special summon 'Ape Fighter' again!"

"Now you'll see how meaningless your underhanded dueling is!" Yuichi shouted. "Go, Ape Fighter, attack Submarineroid!"
"Flip set card," Kira said calmly, flipping another back row card. "Trap Card—Dimensional Prison. When an opponent's monster attacks, banish it."
The unlucky ape never made it to the invincible submarine. Just as its giant paw was about to land, space split open and a powerful force sucked it away, vanishing it instantly.
Yuichi's eyes were red.
He never expected that the ape just snatched back from the grave, would immediately get express shipped to another dimension.
"Damn it... but that means you've used up all your set cards. Next, 'Infernal Dragon' attacks! Attack Submarineroid!"
This time there was finally no interference—the Infernal Dragon's claws broke through the sub's defense, tearing it apart.
At least that would stop him from getting slapped by that invincible sub next turn.
"Heh, you probably think you've blocked all my attacks this turn, right?" Yuichi sneered. "Not done yet! I activate my set card—Trap Card: Swamp Mirrorer!"
The trap activated, and a black energy blob quickly took the form of a monster from the murky swamp.
"When this trap is activated, I can declare an attribute and type, then Special Summon it as a monster! I'll summon it as an EARTH Dragon-type monster!"

"The Battle Phase continues!" Yuichi declared. "Swamp Mirrorer, direct attack!"
The trap monster lunged, leaping over Kira's now-empty field.
Yuichi held his breath, eyes wide, waiting for his attack to finally hit that annoying opponent.
But just as the attack was about to land, the blade struck an invisible barrier—Kiteroid!
"Kiteroid's effect, in the graveyard," Kira explained. "Once, it can reduce battle damage to 0."
Seeing what should have been a sure hit blocked at the last second, Yuichi felt as if his reward bar had just frozen—a moment of pure frustration.
"Kite...roid? When did..."
Yuichi's eyes widened as he remembered.
"When Submarineroid attacked, it was sent from the deck to the grave by Megaroid City's effect."
The nearby students also realized this.
"I see," Misawa analyzed. "'Megaroid City' doesn't just swap ATK/DEF for direct attack, but also sends Kiteroid for defense. And Submarineroid's switch-to-defense is also a shield. It looks like a cheap trick to steal direct damage, but really, it's a powerful mix of offense and defense."
The students nodded in agreement.
But even as they admitted how strong it was, many couldn't help but watch Yuichi's increasingly red face with a hint of schadenfreude, all thinking the same thing—
