“By the way, do you have the invitation? Let me look at it!” Rein said, for he had a hunch that something was amiss.
“Here it is.” The beautiful woman handed him a stack of invitations, each styled differently.
After quickly browsing through several, Rein’s expression became pensive.
Sure enough, there was a problem, as among the dozens of invitations, a few did not even invite Jennifer but were direct invitations to him.
Do they really insist on my attendance?
Because if it was just a normal banquet aimed at currying favor, then having Jennifer attend, the well-acquainted Lady Crawley, would have been enough.
However, there seemed to be an implied insistence on his presence….
This elicited an odd feeling in Rein.
After pondering, he asked a servant to summon the short Matteo.
“Matteo, make a trip to Flashgold Town and inquire from Sheriff Hamilton if Alonso and these noble families have some sort of secret connection. Ask Lord Hamilton to give me an answer as soon as possible.”
Upon hearing Rein’s command, Matteo promptly responded, “As you command, my lord! I’ll go immediately!”
Rein then turned to the beautiful woman and said, “Jennifer, for this banquet, it would be best for me to attend alone.”
The beautiful woman’s eyebrows furrowed slightly as she said, “Dear, is this a trap?”
Rein shook his head and answered, “It’s not certain yet, but, my intuition tells me that there might be an issue here.”
That evening, Rein received a reply from Matteo.
To be precise, half an hour later, Hamilton personally arrived at Rein’s mansion.
After some pleasantries, Hamilton’s expression turned serious as he said, “Rein, do you remember the vial of Divine Blood you seized before?”
“Divine Blood?” Rein certainly remembered.
The test-tube-shaped red potion containing a thick amber-like red liquid was indeed memorable. Rein remembered that Hamilton had once explained that this Divine Blood had miraculous effects of delaying aging and accelerating training.
But Divine Blood related to these nobles?
Hamilton continued, “As I’ve mentioned before, the origin of this Divine Blood is heavily linked to the Dark Cult.”
“You mean….” Rein instantly grasped the implication in Hamilton’s words.
Hamilton nodded and said, “Just as you’re thinking.”
“Since that incident, we’ve discreetly investigated and found that several noble families in the County Town had either possessed or purchased Divine Blood. The list you had Matteo provide includes Alonso and these several noble families.”
“Furthermore, our investigation suggests that the source of this Divine Blood leads directly back to Alonso. But since he’s the eldest son of Count Habs, the investigation halted there.”
Pausing, Hamilton looked earnestly at Rein and said, “Rein, although I know that your strength is unparalleled, even surpassing my own, I would still advise against going, as there might be a plot by the Dark Cult behind this.”
“Perhaps, once you join the imperial Sword Bearer organization, you might accumulate enough strength to deal with this Dark Cult.”
Hamilton’s words were prudent, and of course, Rein knew that.
But the fact that these nobles were pressuring Jennifer through these invitations already demonstrated their stance.
That this was merely the first step.
If he refused, they surely had a contingency plan.
After some thought, Rein slightly bowed and said, “Lord Hamilton, thank you very much for making the trip here.”
Hamilton waved his hand dismissively and stood up saying, “Rein, I’ve made the situation clear to you, the decision is still yours to make. If… you really decide to go, just let Matteo tell me!”
After Hamilton left, Rein paced in his study, hands crossed over his chest.
Previously, the Dark Cult had targeted him through various assassinations and sneak attacks, but this time, Rein had a feeling that they intended to trap him.
“Could it be that the venue of the banquet has some special arrangements made by the Dark Cult? In such a case, it wouldn’t be safe to let Jennifer go. It would be best for me to go alone.”
Of course, if the situation was not as he anticipated, and it was merely Alonso wanting to mend their relationship in person, that would be ideal.
