“Why did you kiss me just like that?”
His simple two-word answer, devoid of any other factors, was followed by a shift of his gaze as he opened the food containers on the coffee table, which contained a simplistic two dishes and one soup, layered on top of one another.
He removed them one by one, placing them on the coffee table, and then pulled out chopsticks, ready to start eating.
When he saw the messy state of the food inside the containers, his brow furrowed slightly and he turned to look at Gu Qiangwei, “Did it fall to the ground?”
Gu Qiangwei was taken aback, glancing at the food in the container.
“Uh, probably got jostled on the way here,” she guessed the reason for the spillage but didn’t want to admit it directly, so she made up an excuse.
But Qin Sijue knitted his brows tighter, his eyes fixing on her seemingly guilty ones, “Which road from Jueyuan to Dijue is bumpy?”
Gu Qiangwei met his deep gaze, feeling even more guilty.
“Caused by a sudden stop,” she found another excuse.
Qin Sijue was even less convinced.
The more she spoke incoherently, the more apparent her guilt became.
Yet he didn’t continue to question her, instead, he gently picked up a box of food, and began to eat unhurriedly.
Gu Qiangwei looked up at him eating, hesitantly took the food containers herself, and ate without tasting.
The office fell into silence, both faces harboring their own thoughts.
“Did you see the engagement news?”
He looked up at her fair face, and Qin Sijue’s voice, warm and low, couldn’t help but arise.
At those words, Gu Qiangwei paused in her eating, her eyelids lifted slightly, glancing at Qin Sijue, then dropped again.
“Mhm.” She murmured softly, eating absently.
Qin Sijue just watched her, and after a few seconds, he continued, “What do you think about it?”
She looked up, seemingly losing her appetite, put down her bowl and chopsticks, and stared at him seriously.
“What do you hope I think?”
“Of course, to ignore those things.”
“But my eyes aren’t blind, nor my ears deaf, how can I pretend to see and hear nothing?”
“Didn’t you just pretend quite well?”
If it hadn’t been for the disorder of the food, he would have really thought that she hadn’t seen the engagement news.
Gu Qiangwei glanced at him and didn’t speak, unsure of how to respond.
Asking her what she thought? What else could she think?
It was nearly November now, and his engagement banquet with Nangong Feifei was scheduled for one month later. What could she possibly think?
“Remember, unless you witness it with your own eyes or hear it directly from me, you can overlook everything else. Because it’s unimportant.”
Locked in his gaze, Gu Qiangwei fell into a daze.
Was it really unimportant? How would he face his grandfather then?
Although he had been defying his grandfather for her sake these days, she very well knew that Qin Sijue actually valued his family greatly, especially since he lost his parents at six and had grown the closest to his grandparents.
“Then what about you? What will you do?” If he didn’t get engaged, that would mean going against his grandfather. What if his grandfather became as ill as last time because of this?
Qin Sijue picked up a slice of lean meat and brought it to her lips, “Leave these things to me to handle. What you need to do now is eat obediently and have some more!”
Watching his composed demeanor, Gu Qiangwei was stunned for a while before opening her mouth and eating the slice of lean meat.
“Mhm.” He picked up another bite of scrambled eggs with tomatoes and brought it to her mouth.
Looking at the food he was offering, Gu Qiangwei seemed to be influenced by his mood as the heaviness in her chest suddenly lifted, replaced by an appetite.
