In an instant, Evelyn felt a chill run down her spine, as if all her thoughts had been seen through by Kyle Kinston.
Mabel Quinn smiled. Her outfit today was indeed put together by Kyle Kinston, and she had to admit, Kyle had a good eye for these things. Even without makeup, she felt it matched perfectly—elegant and refined.
Evelyn forced herself to stay calm and picked up a topic to chat about. After all, this date was not easy to come by, and she couldn’t let it go to waste. However, Evelyn’s conversational topics were all centered around Kyle Kinston.
Of course, she would also subtly mention Mabel Quinn now and then, saying things like, "Mabel used to get along quite well with the boy who sat next to her in class. If he didn’t already have a girlfriend, maybe Mabel would have dated him. I always thought Mabel would pick a boyfriend of that type, but I didn’t expect her to end up with someone like Mr. Kinston. So, Mabel is really lucky. I just wonder what you like about Mabel, Mr. Kinston. She seems pretty ordinary to me."
These words from Evelyn not only made Mabel Quinn frown but even Alice Conley caught the insinuation. "Evelyn, Mabel is Mr. Kinston’s girlfriend, so why are you bringing up all this nonsense? Besides, how is Mabel ordinary? Professors praise her professional achievements, she has won scholarships, and she’s beautiful!"
"I’m just speaking the truth. Mr. Kinston has surely seen all kinds of women; Mabel would be ordinary among those socialites and female stars, right? Plus, Mabel used to get along really well with Gary, who sat next to her. She would even blush every time she talked about him." Evelyn blurted out as if it was unintentional.
"Really?" Kyle Kinston, however, seemed completely uninterested in the gossip Evelyn was dishing out. He turned to look at Mabel Quinn beside him and simply said, "I like Mabel for her entirety, and does it really matter who she gets along with?"
Kyle Kinston’s words rendered all of Evelyn’s previous comments useless.
"Right, it’s not important, not important!" Alice Conley hurriedly said, while Evelyn seethed inwardly. Her intention in saying those things was to create a wedge between Kyle Kinston and Mabel Quinn, but it ended up sounding like Kyle was confessing his love for Mabel instead.
The more Evelyn watched the slight blush on Mabel Quinn’s cheeks, the more jealousy and resentment she felt inside.
At that moment, the waiter served the drinks and dishes they had ordered earlier. As the waiter left, Evelyn exchanged a glance with him, a look that only the two of them could understand.
"Alright, let’s just eat," Alice Conley said, trying to ease the tension in the air.
Evelyn smiled, "Let’s eat and drink first. Mabel, if I said anything wrong earlier, don’t mind it!" She then lifted her drink, making a toasting gesture towards Mabel Quinn.
Mabel Quinn could somewhat guess Evelyn’s little schemes, but being under the expectant gaze of Alice Conley sitting beside her, she also picked up her drink in front of her and said to Evelyn, "It’s okay."
Evelyn downed her drink in one gulp, watching as Mabel Quinn also took a sip of her drink, and only then did a slight smile play on her lips.
