Damien Rook and Lena made their way through the crumbling streets, the Scepter of Aegis now firmly in Damien's grasp. The relic thrummed with power, its silver surface glowing faintly even in the darkened alleys of the city. With this weapon, they had a fighting chance to defeat the Zombie King and end the undead plague.
But something in the air felt off, a tension building between them since they left the cathedral.
The silence between them had grown heavy, and Damien couldn't shake the feeling that Lena was hiding something. Ever since they escaped the Wraith Lord, she'd been distant, avoiding eye contact and refusing to speak about the journey ahead.
"You haven't said much since we got the scepter," Damien finally said, his voice low but cutting through the night air.
Lena didn't stop walking. "We have bigger problems than small talk, Rook. We're not out of this yet."
"That's not what I'm asking." Damien stepped in front of her, blocking her path. "Something's been bothering you. What is it?"
Lena's eyes flickered, the glow of the streetlights casting long shadows over her face. For a moment, she seemed conflicted, as if an internal war was raging inside her. Then, her hand went to her side, resting on the hilt of her knife.
Damien's eyes narrowed. "What's going on, Lena?"
The air between them grew thick with tension. Lena's lips tightened, and she let out a breath, her hand still gripping the knife. "I didn't want to tell you this, Damien. But the Zombie King—he offered me a deal."
Damien's heart pounded in his chest. "What kind of deal?"
"A way out." Her voice trembled, but her eyes met his with a cold determination. "He promised me freedom if I delivered you and the scepter to him. He's been watching us this whole time."
Damien's breath caught in his throat. Lena—the one person he trusted in this wasteland—had been considering betraying him. He felt a wave of anger and hurt rising, but he forced himself to stay calm. "You were going to hand me over to him? For what, Lena? To save yourself?"
Tears welled in her eyes, but she didn't drop her guard. "I didn't want to, but you don't understand what he's capable of. He controls everything, Damien. He'll kill us both if we don't play by his rules."
Damien tightened his grip on the scepter, the weight of the betrayal hitting him hard. "And what happens now? You turn me in and walk away?"
Lena hesitated, her body trembling. For a split second, it seemed like she might go through with it. Then, her hand dropped from her knife, and she turned away, her shoulders slumping in defeat.
"I couldn't do it," she whispered. "I couldn't betray you, Damien."
Damien felt a mixture of relief and anger. "You made the right choice. But now we have to be smarter, because if the Zombie King knows where we are, we need to move. Fast."
Lena nodded, her face pale and her eyes haunted by the choice she almost made.
