Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 220

The rain poured down in heavy sheets, turning the dirt path beneath Damien's boots into a muddy mess. He and Lena had been walking for hours, the glow of the Scepter of Aegis faint under the cloudy night sky. They had put distance between themselves and the Zombie King's scouts, but Damien knew it wouldn't last. The Zombie King wanted the scepter—and him—dead.

Lena walked in silence beside him, her eyes distant, her earlier confession still lingering between them. The weight of her near-betrayal pressed heavily on them both, but there was no time to dwell on it. They had to reach the ruins of Fallhollow, a village destroyed during the first days of the outbreak.

It was rumored to hold another key to the Zombie King's power—a dark secret buried in its forgotten crypts.

"I can feel them," Lena said quietly, breaking the silence. Her voice was strained, as if the very air around them had become heavy with unseen danger. "They're close."

Damien nodded, gripping the scepter tighter. "They'll never stop hunting us. Not until the King is dead."

A howl echoed through the night, followed by the sound of snapping branches. Damien spun around, drawing his revolver as shadows emerged from the treeline—hunters, grotesque creatures with sharp, elongated limbs and faces twisted in agony. Their yellow eyes gleamed in the darkness, locking onto their prey.

"Go!" Damien shouted, pushing Lena forward. She didn't hesitate, sprinting toward the crumbling buildings of Fallhollow in the distance. Damien fired off a few shots, the silver bullets finding their marks in the nearest hunter, but the others charged with feral speed.

Damien bolted after Lena, his boots slipping in the mud. The hunters closed in, their ragged breaths loud in the night. Just as they reached the outskirts of the village, Lena stumbled, her ankle giving out. Damien skidded to a stop, grabbing her arm and pulling her up, but the hunters were too close.

"Get inside!" Damien barked, dragging Lena toward a half-collapsed stone house.

They slammed the door shut, barricading it with broken furniture. Outside, the hunters clawed at the wood, their guttural growls filling the small space. Damien knew it wouldn't hold for long.

"We're trapped," Lena said, her breath ragged. "We're not getting out of here."

"We will," Damien said, his voice firm. He raised the scepter, its light growing brighter as if feeding off his determination. "The scepter can repel them. I just need to use it right."

Lena watched him, doubt flickering in her eyes. "What if it doesn't work? What if—"

"It will," Damien interrupted, focusing on the pulsing energy in the scepter. He could feel its power growing, but it demanded something in return—a sacrifice.

The door began to splinter, claws tearing through the wood. The hunters were seconds away from breaking through.

Damien looked at Lena, his heart pounding. "I need you to trust me."

Without another word, he raised the scepter and slammed it into the ground. A shockwave of energy erupted from it, blasting outward, disintegrating the hunters in a blinding flash of light. When the glow faded, the village was silent once again.

Damien sank to his knees, his strength drained. The scepter had saved them, but at a cost.

Lena knelt beside him. "You okay?"

Damien nodded, though he felt the weight of what had just happened. The scepter had taken something from him, and he knew there would be more sacrifices ahead.

"We keep moving," Damien said, his voice hoarse. "This isn't over."
