As dawn broke, Damien and Mira stumbled upon a crumbling cathedral tucked deep in the wilderness, a relic of a time before the apocalypse. Ivy crawled up its stone walls, weaving through shattered stained glass, casting shards of colored light across the silent forest floor. The air felt heavy here, almost sacred, as if the place itself still whispered old prayers for mercy and protection.
"This looks… safe?" Mira ventured, uncertainly gazing up at the towering structure.
Damien shook his head. "It feels too quiet." He scanned the surroundings, hand hovering over his blade, instinctually cautious.
They moved inside, finding the pews coated in dust, echoes of past lives hovering in the stale air. A golden altar lay cracked but still held traces of its former glory, candles melted into grotesque shapes from days long past. Damien's gaze caught a shadow shifting near the altar, something or someone lurking.
A hoarse voice broke the silence. "Not many make it this far."
From behind the altar emerged a tall, gaunt figure with eyes that glinted in the dim light. He looked human, but something was off—his skin appeared to almost blend with the shadows, an unnatural chill radiating from him.
"Who are you?" Damien demanded, hand on his weapon, every muscle tensed.
The man smirked, stepping forward slowly. "A guardian of sorts," he replied cryptically, "one who watches over what remains of this sanctuary. But tell me, why have you come?"
"We're hunting someone—a leader among the dead. We're here to stop him before he spreads further."
The figure's gaze narrowed, interest flickering in his eyes. "Ah, the Zombie King… He's been here, but not in the way you expect." He gestured to the cathedral's shadowed corners. "This place is marked by him, left behind as a warning. Those who enter don't often leave."
At his words, Mira noticed subtle movements in the shadows—the glint of undead eyes watching from the far edges of the room, slowly drawing closer.
Damien and Mira readied themselves, standing back-to-back as the creatures advanced, a low growl echoing in the stone hall. The stranger only smiled, his hand weaving in a strange motion as if directing the shadows themselves. The undead paused at his gesture, held at bay by some invisible force.
"Perhaps," the stranger murmured, "I could help you… for a price."
"What price?" Damien asked, eyes never leaving the slowly approaching figures.
The man's gaze flickered to Mira, an unsettling gleam in his eyes. "Your loyalty. Join me, and together we could end this, seize control of these lands for ourselves."
Damien hesitated, the weight of the offer settling over him. He glanced at Mira, her expression wary but resolute.
"No deal," Damien said firmly. "We're here to end this plague, not rule over its remains."
The stranger sighed, disappointed but amused. "Very well. Then survive… if you can."
At his gesture, the undead rushed forward. With Mira by his side, Damien met the oncoming horde, fighting with a fiery determination. And though they were outnumbered, the bond they shared proved stronger than any dark force they faced. Together, they fought with all they had, determined to see the dawn.
