The ground shook beneath Zara's feet as the first explosion ripped through the command center's lower levels. Callum had barely finished securing the charges before alarms blared, filling the labyrinthine halls with an ominous cacophony of screeches and flashing lights.
"Move!" Zara barked, gripping Callum's arm and dragging him into a side corridor. Behind them, the hive-like structure groaned as its organic walls started to collapse, spilling chunks of glowing debris.
"We're running out of time!" Callum shouted, his breath labored as they sprinted down the narrowing passage.
Zara's sharp eyes scanned their path, looking for an escape route. The pulsating veins of the structure throbbed like a heartbeat, making the walls seem alive. A wrong turn could lead them straight into a trap—or worse, a dead end.
"Hang tight. There's always a way out," Zara muttered to herself, her tone more reassuring than she felt.
Just as they rounded a corner, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed ahead. Shadows danced on the wall, their shapes grotesque and inhuman. Zara stopped abruptly, motioning for Callum to hold his position.
"They're blocking us in," she whispered, her mind racing.
Callum nodded, checking his plasma rifle. "What's the plan?"
Zara's lips tightened. The narrow space meant they couldn't afford a prolonged firefight. Time was slipping away, and the explosions weren't waiting for them. She glanced at the pulsating organic conduits above their heads and an idea struck her.
"Shoot the veins," she said, pointing to the ceiling.
Callum frowned. "Won't that bring the whole place down on us?"
"Exactly. But only on them. Trust me," Zara said, already unsheathing her blade.
As the creatures emerged—a trio of monstrous, insectoid hunters with serrated claws and glowing eyes—Callum aimed and fired. The plasma bolts hit their mark, severing the throbbing veins. Sparks and viscous fluid erupted, and the ceiling collapsed in a fiery cascade of debris.
The creatures screeched as they were crushed under the falling rubble. Zara and Callum shielded their faces, the heat and smoke stinging their eyes.
"That won't hold them for long," Callum coughed, wiping sweat and grime from his forehead.
"Doesn't need to," Zara said, grabbing his arm. "We just need to reach the extraction point."
The pair pushed forward, the path ahead lit only by the flickering glow of the unstable core. The ground grew increasingly unstable, cracks forming under their boots as more explosions rocked the command center.
Finally, they reached an open chamber. A faint light streamed in through a broken wall, revealing the exit. Zara exhaled in relief but froze as a low growl rumbled behind them.
Turning slowly, she saw it—a hulking beast unlike any they'd faced before. Its body was a twisted amalgamation of metal and flesh, its glowing red eyes fixed on them with predatory intent.
"No way we're taking that thing head-on," Callum muttered, taking a step back.
Zara smirked, adrenaline flooding her veins. "We don't have to. We just need to make it mad enough to chase us."
"Great plan," Callum said dryly, gripping his rifle. "Let's hope it works."
As the beast roared and charged, Zara lunged toward the exit, every instinct screaming at her to survive. The hunt was on.
