Zara and Callum sprinted through the fractured remains of the hive's corridors, the guttural roar of the monstrous beast reverberating in their ears. The air was thick with smoke and dust, making each breath feel like a battle in itself. The beast's heavy footsteps shook the ground, growing louder with each passing second.
"Keep moving!" Zara shouted, glancing over her shoulder. The creature was relentless, its hulking frame smashing through debris with terrifying ease.
"I'm moving as fast as I can!" Callum panted, his rifle bouncing against his chest as he struggled to keep up.
They emerged into a vast chamber illuminated by faint blue light from the collapsing core. The room was littered with jagged debris, creating a deadly obstacle course. Zara's sharp eyes scanned the space, searching for any tactical advantage.
"There!" she pointed to a series of dangling support cables hanging from the ceiling like vines. "We can use those to slow it down."
Callum followed her gaze, his face pale. "You want to climb that? Are you crazy?"
"Got a better idea?" Zara snapped, already leaping onto the nearest piece of rubble to reach the cables.
The beast barreled into the chamber, its glowing red eyes locking onto them. It let out a deafening roar, its claws raking against the ground as it charged.
"Callum, go!" Zara urged, grabbing a cable and swinging herself upward.
Reluctantly, Callum followed, scrambling to climb the nearest cable. The beast lunged, its claws slicing through the air just below Zara's boots. She swung to another cable, narrowly avoiding its grasp.
"Keep it distracted!" Zara called out, pulling herself higher. She spotted a massive steel beam precariously balanced above the chamber. If she could sever the cables holding it in place, it might be enough to trap the beast.
Callum, still dangling mid-air, yelled back, "Distracted? How exactly do you want me to—ah!" He yelped as the beast leaped, snapping its jaws inches away from his leg.
"Shoot at it!" Zara yelled, already climbing toward the beam.
Callum gritted his teeth and swung himself into a more stable position. He aimed his rifle and fired, the plasma bolts striking the creature's armored hide. The beast roared in fury, its attention shifting to Callum.
"Come on, you ugly freak!" Callum taunted, firing again.
Zara reached the top of the chamber, her fingers bleeding from the jagged edges of the metal. She pulled out her blade and began cutting through the fraying cables holding the beam. Each strike made the beam wobble dangerously.
"Almost there," she muttered to herself, sweat dripping down her face.
The beast, enraged by Callum's attacks, lunged at him with terrifying speed. "Zara, whatever you're doing, do it faster!" he shouted.
With one final slash, Zara severed the last cable. The beam groaned and tipped, plummeting toward the ground.
"Jump!" Zara screamed.
Callum let go of his cable just as the beam crashed down, striking the beast with a thunderous impact. Dust and debris filled the chamber, and for a moment, everything was silent.
Zara slid down the remaining cable, landing beside Callum. "You okay?" she asked, helping him to his feet.
Callum coughed, shaking the dust from his hair. "Define okay."
They both turned to the pile of rubble where the beast lay buried. The ground trembled faintly, but the creature didn't rise.
"We need to go," Zara said, her voice steady despite her exhaustion. "It's not over yet."
Together, they ran toward the exit, the faint light of freedom just within reach.
