Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 353

Zara kept moving, her breaths shallow but steady. The whispers clawed at her resolve, tugging at memories she'd buried deep. Each step felt heavier than the last, but her grip on the butterfly's glow—a fragile reminder of purpose—kept her grounded.

Callum followed close, his voice cutting through the oppressive air. "Stay focused, Kincaid. It's feeding on your fears. That's what this place does."

"I know," she muttered, though her eyes flicked back toward the shadowy figure of her mother. It lingered at the edge of her vision, whispering accusations Zara had tried to silence for years.

The tunnel twisted sharply, leading to another chamber. This one was smaller than the last, with walls etched in intricate patterns that seemed to ripple and shift. At the center stood a pedestal, upon which rested a crystalline orb. The air around it shimmered like a mirage, and faint voices echoed from within.

"Another test," Callum muttered, lowering his rifle but keeping it ready.

Zara approached cautiously, the butterfly circling the orb like a moth to a flame. The whispers from the orb grew louder as she neared, resolving into words.

"Do you seek the truth, Zara Kincaid?"

The question sent a chill down her spine. She exchanged a glance with Callum, who gave her a small nod. "You have to answer it," he said. "It's the only way forward."

Zara hesitated, then stepped closer. "I do," she said, her voice steady despite the knot tightening in her chest.

The orb flared to life, projecting images into the room. Zara staggered back as scenes from her past played out—her father's smile as he taught her to track, the laughter of her younger siblings, the day she'd left them behind to join the security force. And then, the fire. The screams. The moment she'd found their lifeless bodies amidst the wreckage.

"No," Zara whispered, clenching her fists. "This isn't real."

But the images didn't stop. They morphed, shifting to show her future—or a version of it. A wasteland stretched before her, littered with the bodies of those she'd tried to protect. Her own face appeared, hollow-eyed and defeated, as the whispers returned.

"You cannot save them. You cannot save yourself."

"Enough!" Zara shouted, her voice cutting through the visions. She grabbed the orb, its surface cold and unyielding beneath her fingers. "I don't need to save everyone. I just need to keep going."

The orb shattered, its fragments dissolving into light. The room trembled, and the walls began to peel away, revealing another tunnel ahead.

Callum rushed to her side, gripping her shoulder. "You okay?"

Zara nodded, though her hands still trembled. "Let's move before this place throws another curveball."

As they entered the new tunnel, the butterfly's glow intensified, guiding them forward. Zara's jaw tightened. Whatever awaited them next, she was ready to face it.

Because she knew now that the labyrinth's greatest weapon wasn't the darkness around her—it was the darkness within. And she wasn't afraid anymore.
