Zara's breathing slowed as she tightened her grip on the pistol. Her crimson dress clung to her, a sharp contrast against the cold, metallic corridor that stretched before her. The labyrinth had shifted again, molding itself into a maze of industrial tunnels. The faint hum of machinery reverberated through the walls, accompanied by an occasional metallic screech.
Callum, now trailing further behind, gave her a warning glance. "Zara, something's not right. These tunnels shouldn't—"
A loud crash interrupted him. The ceiling behind them caved in, cutting off their retreat. Zara instinctively raised her pistol, her eyes scanning the shadows that seemed to ripple and move on their own.
"They're here," she muttered.
From the shadows emerged the creatures—humanoid figures with grotesque, elongated limbs and faces that were more skeletal than human. Their glowing eyes locked on Zara and Callum, their snarls echoing like a predator savoring its prey.
"Stay close," Zara ordered, stepping into a defensive stance.
The first creature lunged, claws glinting under the dim light. Zara fired a precise shot, the bullet tearing through its skull. It crumpled to the ground, but two more took its place. She pivoted smoothly, ducking under a swipe and delivering a kick to another's midsection, sending it sprawling.
"Callum!" she yelled as she reloaded.
"I'm on it!" he shouted, pulling out his own weapon and firing at the advancing horde.
One of the creatures managed to close the distance, leaping at Zara with a guttural scream. She sidestepped at the last moment, grabbing its arm and twisting it sharply. The sickening crack of bone was followed by a clean shot to its head.
The tunnel grew tighter as they advanced, forcing Zara and Callum to move in tandem. Their movements were a symphony of survival—Zara's fluid, calculated strikes paired with Callum's cover fire.
But the creatures kept coming.
"They're not stopping!" Callum growled, frustration lacing his voice.
Zara's eyes darted around, searching for an advantage. She spotted a cluster of exposed pipes overhead, steam hissing from their rusted joints. "The pipes!" she yelled. "Shoot them!"
Callum didn't hesitate. He aimed and fired at the pipes, and the explosion of scalding steam engulfed the creatures. Their screeches of pain echoed through the tunnel as they fell back, writhing and melting under the intense heat.
Taking the momentary reprieve, Zara grabbed Callum's arm. "Move. Now!"
They sprinted down the tunnel, the sounds of the creatures fading behind them. The corridor opened into a larger chamber, dimly lit and filled with stacks of abandoned crates. Zara scanned the room, her pistol still raised.
"This isn't over," she said, her voice low but firm.
Callum nodded, reloading his weapon. "It never is with you, is it?"
Zara smirked faintly, her adrenaline still pumping. "You'll thank me when we're alive."
As the faint growls echoed once more, Zara squared her shoulders. The fight was far from over, but she was ready. This was her world now, and she intended to survive it.
