The tunnel stretched on, damp and suffocating, illuminated only by the faint beams of Zara and Rowan's flashlights. Kellan walked ahead, his confidence unnerving despite the oppressive darkness. Every step echoed, the sound bouncing off the cold concrete walls and reminding them how far underground they were.
"Where exactly are we going?" Zara asked, her voice cutting through the eerie silence.
"An old supply depot," Kellan replied without looking back. "It's been abandoned for years, but it's the closest access point to the enemy's operations. If my calculations are right, we'll find answers there."
"And if your calculations are wrong?" Rowan muttered.
Kellan turned slightly, his smirk visible even in the dim light. "Then we'll all die knowing we tried."
Zara rolled her eyes but said nothing. Trusting Kellan wasn't a choice she made lightly, but with the city overrun and resources dwindling, every gamble felt like a necessary one.
As they ventured deeper, the air grew colder, tinged with the metallic stench of decay. Zara's grip on her weapon tightened, her senses on high alert. The tunnel seemed to close in around them, shadows playing tricks on her vision.
"Hold up," Kellan whispered suddenly, raising a hand.
Zara and Rowan stopped in their tracks, their flashlights darting around the space. The faint sound of shuffling reached their ears—a slow, dragging noise that set Zara's nerves on edge.
"They're close," Kellan said, pulling a compact weapon from his holster.
Zara motioned for Rowan to take position. The three of them moved forward cautiously, their steps as silent as possible. The shuffling grew louder, accompanied by guttural groans.
As they rounded a corner, Zara's flashlight landed on a cluster of figures ahead. Zombies—half a dozen of them—moved aimlessly, their decayed forms illuminated in the beam.
"Take them out quietly," Zara instructed.
Rowan drew his knife, his movements swift and precise as he crept up on the nearest zombie. The blade sank into the base of its skull, and the creature collapsed with barely a sound.
Zara followed suit, her own knife dispatching another undead. Kellan, to her surprise, handled his with equal efficiency, his motions quick and calculated.
When the last zombie fell, the trio exchanged brief nods before continuing onward.
The tunnel opened into a larger chamber, the remnants of the supply depot scattered across the floor. Rusted crates, broken machinery, and long-forgotten tools filled the space. But what caught Zara's attention was the glowing device in the center—a pulsing orb of faint blue light encased in metal.
"What the hell is that?" Rowan asked, his voice low.
"Energy source," Kellan said, his smirk replaced by a rare seriousness. "It's what's powering their coordination. Destroy this, and you'll disrupt their entire network."
Zara stepped closer, her instincts screaming caution. "And what happens if it blows up in our faces?"
Kellan shrugged. "Guess we'll find out."
Zara's jaw tightened. The stakes had never felt higher.
