Zara circled the glowing orb cautiously, its rhythmic hum vibrating in her chest. The device pulsated with unnatural energy, casting eerie shadows that danced across the walls of the dilapidated supply depot. Rowan stood guard, his weapon ready, while Kellan tinkered with a rusted console nearby, his brow furrowed in concentration.
"Careful, Zara," Rowan warned. "We don't know what we're dealing with here."
"No kidding," Zara muttered, crouching to examine the orb closer. Its surface was smooth, but tendrils of energy seemed to writhe beneath, like a living, breathing entity. Her gut told her this was no ordinary tech—it was something far more dangerous.
Kellan let out a low whistle. "This isn't just an energy source. It's a beacon."
"A beacon?" Zara repeated, her tone sharp.
"Yeah. It's sending signals," Kellan explained, gesturing to the flickering screen on the console. "This thing is relaying data, probably to the Zombie King's forces. That's how they're staying so coordinated."
Rowan's grip on his weapon tightened. "Then we shut it down. Now."
Kellan shook his head. "It's not that simple. If we destroy it recklessly, we could trigger a chain reaction that takes us all out—and anyone within a mile radius."
Zara straightened, her eyes narrowing. "Then find a way to disable it. Fast."
Kellan grinned, though his expression was tense. "You got it, boss."
As Kellan worked, Zara and Rowan scanned the room for any threats. The silence was oppressive, broken only by the faint crackle of the orb and the distant drip of water. Zara's instincts prickled, a nagging sense of unease settling over her.
"This is too quiet," she muttered.
Rowan nodded. "Agreed. Feels like we're being watched."
