The morning light filtered through the dense canopy of the forest, but the ominous gray clouds on the horizon seemed to cast a pall over Zara's mood. She adjusted her leather harness, feeling the weight of her gear, and raised the binoculars to her eyes. The landscape stretched out before her—a barren field with jagged cliffs rising in the distance. Between her and that destination was a fortress of twisted metal and debris, unmistakably a stronghold for the infected.
Kellan approached, his usual smirk replaced with a serious expression. "Anything?" he asked, glancing toward the cliffs.
"Plenty," Zara replied, handing him the binoculars. "Patrols along the perimeter, snipers on the towers, and—" She paused, her voice tinged with unease. "Something bigger. Their movement patterns are too organized. Someone's pulling the strings."
Rowan joined them, resting his rifle on his shoulder. "Let me guess. Zombie King's lieutenants?"
"Maybe," Zara said, crossing her arms. "Either way, we're going to have to go through that stronghold to reach the control center. That's where the real signal jammer is."
Kellan lowered the binoculars. "This mission just keeps getting better."
Zara shot him a look. "If you've got complaints, now's the time to voice them."
"None," he replied with a grin that didn't reach his eyes. "I just hope you've got a plan that doesn't involve us getting swarmed in there."
Zara turned back to the map spread out on the ground. "We hit them from two sides. Rowan and I will create a distraction on the east end—set charges, draw their attention. Kellan, you sneak in through the western drainage tunnels and disable their defenses. Once that's done, we regroup and push toward the control center."
Rowan frowned. "That's risky. If something goes wrong—"
"It won't," Zara interrupted, her voice firm. "We don't have time for doubts. Every second we waste, they're reinforcing their hold on this region. We've seen what happens to survivors who get caught in their path."
Rowan's expression softened, and he nodded. "All right. Let's do it."
They moved quickly, each member of the team slipping into their roles like clockwork. Zara led Rowan along the tree line, her movements precise and deliberate. The wind carried the faint stench of decay, and her grip on her pistol tightened.
When they reached the eastern perimeter, she crouched behind a rusted truck and began planting explosives. The faint chatter of infected patrols grew louder, but Zara's focus didn't waver.
"Charges set," she whispered to Rowan.
He nodded, his gaze scanning the area. "Ready to light it up?"
"Not yet," Zara replied. "We need to give Kellan more time."
The sound of distant gunfire echoed from the west, followed by a loud explosion. Zara smirked. "Looks like Kellan's ahead of schedule. Let's move."
As the first charge detonated, chaos erupted in the stronghold. Zara and Rowan darted between cover, their weapons blazing as they cut through the disoriented infected.
"Stay sharp!" Zara shouted, adrenaline surging through her veins.
But as they pushed deeper into the fortress, a guttural roar stopped them in their tracks. Zara's eyes widened as a massive shadow loomed over them.
"That's… new," Rowan muttered, raising his rifle.
Zara gritted her teeth. "Focus fire. We're not done yet."
