Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 546

The dim glow of the reactor bathed the containment lab in an unnatural green light. The air was thick with radiation, and each breath felt like swallowing embers. The hum of the reactor grew louder as if alive, pulsing with energy that seeped into the walls. The team stood in silence for a moment, taking in the haunting scene.

"This place reeks of death," Jenna muttered, her flamethrower held tightly.

"No kidding," Derek added, keeping his shield raised. "Whatever that thing is, it's keeping those freaks outside amped up."

Ethan's voice crackled through their comms. "Careful, team. That reactor's output is off the charts. You've got to disable it, but one wrong move could level the entire zone."

Marcus stepped forward, his shotgun at the ready. "Brain, give me options."

"There's a control panel to your left," Ethan replied, scanning blueprints on his tablet. "If you can access it, you might be able to overload the system and force a shutdown."

"Might?" Riley asked, her sniper rifle sweeping the room.

"Let's call it an educated guess," Ethan quipped.

"Guesswork's all we've got," Marcus said. "Huntress, Quick Shot, cover me. Shield, Blaze, hold the entrance."

As Marcus moved toward the panel, Lila and Riley flanked him, their weapons aimed at every shadow. The faint sound of shuffling grew louder, echoing from the far end of the lab.

"They're coming," Derek warned, his shield bracing the sealed door. "And they don't sound happy."

"Blaze, do your thing," Marcus ordered.

Jenna nodded, setting incendiary charges along the doorway. "This'll slow them down, but it won't hold forever."

At the control panel, Marcus stared at the cracked screen, its interface flickering erratically. "Brain, this thing's barely functional. How do I shut it down?"

"Look for the manual override," Ethan instructed. "There should be a lever or switch near the base of the panel."

Marcus crouched, his fingers brushing against a rusted lever. "Found it," he said, gripping it tightly.

"Wait!" Ethan interrupted. "You need to sync the reactor core first. Otherwise, it'll detonate."

"Great," Marcus muttered, scanning the panel for more options.

Before he could act, a deafening crash came from the entrance. The reinforced door buckled as the Juggernaut from outside slammed into it, its irradiated form glowing brighter than before.

"It's back!" Riley shouted, firing a round that ricocheted off its thick skull.

"Blaze, light it up!" Marcus yelled.

Jenna triggered the charges, engulfing the doorway in flames. The Juggernaut roared but pressed forward, its molten flesh dripping as it forced its way inside.

"Shield, hold the line!"

Derek charged, his riot shield colliding with the Juggernaut. The impact shook the room, but Derek held firm, buying precious seconds.

"Marcus, hurry up!" Lila urged, unloading her pistols into the advancing horde behind the Juggernaut.

Marcus pulled the lever, and the reactor began to whine, its glow intensifying. "It's syncing!"

"Good," Ethan said. "Now hit the red switch on the right. That'll trigger the overload."

Marcus slammed the switch, and the reactor's hum turned into a high-pitched scream. Warning lights flashed, and a countdown appeared on the screen: 60 seconds.

"Move!" Marcus barked. "Everyone out!"

The team retreated as the Juggernaut lunged, smashing through equipment and cables. Riley fired a final shot, hitting its exposed eye and slowing it just enough for Derek to shove it into the reactor's path.

The team burst out of the lab, flames and smoke trailing behind them. As they reached the perimeter, a massive explosion erupted, sending a shockwave that knocked them to the ground.

When the dust settled, the lab was gone, replaced by a smoldering crater. The horde lay motionless, their glowing eyes extinguished.

"It's over," Marcus said, pulling himself to his feet.

"For now," Lila replied, staring into the distance where another faint green glow flickered on the horizon.
