"Open fire!" Upon seeing the ghostly zombies, Zhang Zhiyun’s face drastically changed as he commanded his soldiers to focus their fire on the open space behind the biker gang. Each shot resulted in a dark green splash of blood in the air.
Certain people saw slender, deathly pallid monsters phasing in and out of sight, realizing they could turn invisible. It was these creatures that resulted in the bikers’ frantic behavior.
Phantasm-like, how can such creatures not instill fear?
Hand gripping the lever, a deep red glimmer flickering within Tang Ye’s eyes, he couldn’t fathom why these ghostly zombies were here.
Shouldn’t they be in Jinhe City?
Cursing, Tang Ye fired the shells remaining in his magazine like he was exorcising his anger. However, because the ghostly zombies murder their victims strategically, only appearing to individuals not the entire group, Tang Ye didn’t know how many were behind the bikers. After firing off a few more rounds, Tang Ye shouted at Qiongli, "Take the kid and go!"
He then yelled at the soldiers auditioning their assault on the air, "Retreat! We have to retreat! We can’t hold them off!"
Confused, the soldiers and even a few officers, including Zhang Zhiyun, turned to Tang Ye. Some idiots asked this seemingly naïve question, but most were well aware of the terror of these invisible creatures.
The unknown number of them was the most terrifying part. The thought that one of these creatures could be lurking nearby even after the battle would be purely horrifying.
As Zhang Zhiyun hesitated, everyone watched Tang Ye leap down from the twenty-meter-high watchtower. His graceful landing left those nearby, who had yet to warn him, astounded.
"Damn, is he even human?" They stared in shock. Would a normal human jump down from such a height?
As the gates opened, the bikers dashed past without even looking back, desperate to get as far away as possible.
Tang Ye reminded the soldiers, and after glancing back and forth, Zhang Zhiyun finally covered.
"Everyone, retreat through the back gate!"
At his command, everyone orderly descended from the watchtower, and then they heard Tang Ye’s voice again.
"Those who haven’t seen those things, close your eyes now, or many of us will die!"
People didn’t quite understand what Tang Ye meant, and not many were willing to comply.
Just as everyone had descended from the watchtower and started to run, a loud noise sounded from the closing gate, causing the bar lock to bend.
Another loud sound caused the lock bar to bend into a "U" shape, and dirt from the watchtowers on both sides started to fall gently.
Immediately after, the third booming sound came, and the gates flew open. The thing that made ghostly zombies truly horrifying wasn’t just their invisibility, but also their speed. Otherwise, the survivors of Jinhe City wouldn’t claim, "If you see them, you die."
After the gates opened, people glanced back and saw a few silhouettes within the emerging dust while others saw white monsters, with mouths taking up a quarter of their faces, charging toward them making cackling noises!
Seeing these faces should cause anyone to panic; after all, people get scared the most not when they see monsters but at the very instant they first catch sight of them!
Imagine you are walking alone on a deserted street, and a person suddenly pops out from around the corner.
Ghostly zombies have this effect too; they just appear out of nowhere all too suddenly!
With just one glance, those who noticed the zombies screamed and started to run faster. People thought they were far away from the zombies until they heard agonizing screams from behind. A few soldiers glanced at the back and saw a white creature flickering in and out.
One officer, having seen this scene, changed his expression. He inadvertently locked eyes with Xu Chengsheng, who had stopped running and was walking back. The officer immediately roared!
"Xu Chengsheng, get your ass back here!"
"Brothers of the fourth squad, follow me!"
This officer was obviously a Level 3 New Human. After sprinting towards Xu Chengsheng and kicking him away, he led several dozen soldiers to circle around to the back.
"No!" Zhang Zhiyun gritted his teeth in anger when he turned back to see this sight, followed by even more soldiers rushing toward the back of the crowd.
In a short amount of time, hundreds of soldiers circled to the back. Tang Ye and Qiongli exchanged glances, a bit startled. The expressions of the fleeing bikers ranged from perplexed to complicated. However, they did not notice the path ahead while glancing back and ended up driving over a stone, which resulted in a motorcycle flipping over.
"Forget about them; let’s go now, these idiots!"
The leading biker didn’t care about anyone else as it would increase their chances of escape. As for companions who didn’t manage to die despite falling, they couldn’t care less!
The actions of the 46th Division’s soldiers were in stark contrast to the bikers. They formed a human wall at the rear of the crowd, holding onto their guns, ready to face death as they rained bullets into the empty space.
Tang Ye understood their actions, recognizing it as a sacrifice to allow the majority to escape.
While he felt strangely moved, he also cursed at them for being fools. How could there be such altruists in this apocalyptic reality?
Qiongli watched the scene, not bearing to leave their comrades. Tang Ye gave her a stern glance as he glanced around at the terrain. He noticed that the entrance to the valley was only about thirty meters wide, and an idea immediately struck him.
"Keep going, I’ll help them," said Tang Ye indifferently, before his figure flickered and vanished on the spot. A biker nearby who had been desperately crying for help saw Tang Ye disappear like a phantom out of the corner of his eye. He was momentarily stunned, then resumed crying for help, hoping someone would lend him a hand.
Dashing down the rocky hillside to provide support, Tang Ye seemed to realize something and abruptly stopped in his tracks. Considering his current identity as a human, although he could indeed stop those ghostly zombies from advancing, it would require abilities his human form did not possess.
If he recklessly revealed his true form, it would undoubtedly arouse suspicion in Qiongli.
Cursing under his breath, all Tang Ye could do was silently apologize to the soldiers forming the human wall against the ghostly zombies, before watching Qiongli slowly walk away, frequently looking back.
The ghostly zombies were incredibly fast. Not long after the human wall was formed, soldiers in the middle were hit by an unseen force and flung ten meters away, their bodies torn apart. With a breach in the human wall, the invisible ghostly zombies roared as they broke through!
There were always people who liked to look back in the crowd. Anyone who saw several ghostly zombies force their way through the human wall was scared out of their wits and dropped on the spot. Ordinary people simply couldn’t outrun these zombies!
