At a glance, the densely packed zombie heads on the street flooded in from all sides. The soldiers who came with Zhao Yi had likely already been devoured by the horde. Gritting his teeth, Zhao Yi held his son, raised his spear and slammed its end on the ground with a dull "thud." Then, he charged into the swarm of zombies.
The supercells within the body of the Level 4 New Human whirred into action. A surge of fresh and raw scent rose as he swung his spear. Blood and flesh splattered all around. He did not kill for the sake of it, only to break through the zombie horde!
The ground, once covered in white snow, was now soaked in blood red. The sky was grey and dim, snowflakes splashed up as he moved. He looked to his destination while tightly holding his son.
"Dad, you are amazing ..."
Watching the scattered zombie flesh and blood, the boy’s eyes were filled with admiration. He could feel the wind produced by his father’s swift movements swept by.
Hearing this encouraged Zhao Yi to flash a forced smile in his tension-filled face. Perhaps, no matter how difficult the circumstances, a simple word from family could provide him with infinite strength.
However, he did not notice that his son’s voice was somewhat weak and rasp.
Having been knocked down countless times, Zhao Yi had chunks after chunks of muscle torn off by the zombie claws. Meanwhile, another Level 3 Survivor also tried to break through the horde. Never expected that he would be pinned down by a zombie and then swarmed over by the others, the survivor’s screams were soon drowned out by the weight of zombie mass on top of him.
However, persistence pays off. Half an hour later, Zhao Yi, covered in blood, managed to break through the zombie horde. Looking at the broad road ahead, he let out a long-missed smile. The residual blood stains on his body had coagulated into scabs.
Disgusted by the scabs on his arm, he tore off a piece to expose his own arm. His military uniform was torn into shreds by the zombie claws, revealing the flesh on his arm. His clothes were so worn out that Zhao Yi felt it better to move around without them. So, he ripped off more scabs with his ripped clothes. In the process, he winced in pain. Noticing his son’s worried face, he reassured him saying "It’s okay."
During his escape, he encountered no fewer than three Level 4 Zombies, especially the first mutant zombie who nearly took his life.
His arms, back, chest were all gnawed with gruesome wounds. A large piece of flesh was bitten off from his waist. Zhao Yi didn’t even know how he survived. There had been several times when he had a brush with death. However, being a New Human with a Level 4 strength status, every time he punched the air, he felt invincible, thinking that he could evade the zombies like a butterfly floating through flowers without a trace.
In reality, this was only an illusion. Before becoming New Humans, everyone was just an ordinary person. After becoming one, they thought they could defeat millions of zombies, and Zhao Yi was one of them.
He heard many survivors describing the horror of the zombie horde but he had always been dismissive of such stories. Today, he witnessed and experienced it himself. Staying alive amidst the zombie horde was not difficult, no matter the magnitude of the horde.
However, there was a prerequisite – you must always stand firm, like a roly-poly toy that never falls over. Once you fall, you will be swarmed over by countless zombies tearing your body apart!
However, maintaining your balance amidst a massive horde of zombies is exceptionally difficult. The zombies don’t attack one by one like in the comic stories; instead, you will be assaulted by hundreds at the same time. It’s impossible to avoid their collective assault.
"Lucky to be alive, really lucky! Thank God."
Earlier, Zhao Yi was cursing at God, but at this moment, he was extremely grateful to Him for saving his life from the terrifying horde.
The flesh of his arm was torn, exposing the dehydrated muscles inside which were oozing a deep purple, almost black blood.
He thought he got injured because of the zombies’ blood contact, not worrying due to his New Human status. He didn’t think much about it. Holding his son, he began running on the less crowded streets.
Zhao Yi rested one hand on the steel wall of the Command Center Office, laughing at his son who cheered excitedly. However, Zhao Yi noticed something strange in his son’s cheering, but he chose to ignore it.
The zombies in this area had already spread earlier. The Base Commander, Zhang Jinlong of Gaozheng Base, was not an idiot. Since he planned to escape, he had taken all loopholes into consideration, including anticipating an attack at the Command Center. This was why he had sealed off the Central Management Area – no one could enter from outside and no one could exit from inside. At this point, the people inside had already evacuated the area.
Upon confirming that there were no Level 4 or higher zombies around, Zhao Yi, one hand holding a spear and another hand holding his son, moved towards the entrance. Along the way, he could see dead bodies, those who were unable to turn into zombies, scattered beneath the iron walls.
Zhao Yi had lost count of how many times his son had vomited. Infection did trigger vomiting, but Zhao Yi did not worry about this. In his point of view, it was all because his son was exposed to the brutal and bloody scenes.
Perhaps because the people within the iron walls had already evacuated, the zombies outside felt there were no humans inside and therefore did not linger. However, they had been followed by a large horde of zombies.
Pulling his son, he moved towards the entrance. Suddenly, he heard a roar behind him. Turning back, he saw a huge creature appear between the buildings. Due to the obstructed view, he could not see the entire size of the creature, but it was almost seven meters tall!
While moving, Zhao Yi saw a rotten head the size of a house!
Level 5 Zombie Tiger!
Picking up his son, he started to run. He guessed that the Level 5 Zombie Tiger was busily preying on other survivors and did not notice their presence. He saw the entrance of the iron wall but before it was a heap of corpses creating a river of blood!
Like Zhao Yi, many people had tried to seek refuge in the Central Management Area but could not get inside because of the requirement for access cards. As a result, they were massacred by zombies at the gate.
After quickly clearing the bodies, Zhao Yi unlocked the main gate using his iris scanner and hurriedly shut it behind him. Holding his son, he ran towards the Command Center Office Building. They had to get as far away as possible from the Level 5 Zombie Tiger who could sense humans regardless of any hindrances like the iron wall.
