The reason they remain utterly loyal to their controller is that the controller was someone very important to them when they were still human. So, even after turning into zombies, when all humanity disappears, they remember them; the memories left in their brain are all direct recollections with their controller.
Profound memories will always be preserved, while those meaningless events would instantly vanish upon turning into a zombie!
However, the extremely short memory in Song Muyuan’s brain seemed utterly meaningless. Why was that?

But suddenly, with no warning, Tang Ye’s hand, which seemed to have no lethal force at all, effortlessly pierced into the brain of the Level 5 zombie, and it didn’t even groan before its huge body fell down hard to the ground!
And in Tang Ye’s hand, appeared a green Evolution Crystal!
"Marshal... you... what is this..."
