The office door was ajar, so their voices, now high, now low, drifted out.
Su Zixi stood quietly at the door, holding a beautifully wrapped box in her arms. It contained the cookies she tried baking today; she had chosen the prettiest and most successful batch to pack and had come to find He Jingyao, ready to surprise him.
But now, she had already been standing at the door for a good ten minutes, with no intention to go inside.
Adam, who was a distance away from the entrance, hadn’t heard the conversation inside clearly, but Su Zixi’s pale and cold expression made him feel unease at the bottom of his heart.
Just as he was about to ask, Su Zixi suddenly approached him.
“Adam.” She smiled as usual, “I have something I need to go back for right away, could you please not tell Jingyao I was here?”
“Could you promise me?” Su Zixi pursed her lips, her gentle voice carrying a firmness, “Don’t tell Jingyao, no matter what.”
“Young Mistress, what happened?” Adam asked, pushing up his glasses with concern.
Su Zixi smiled and shook her head, “Nothing’s wrong. I’ve thought it over, and I think it’s better to wait for him at home.”
Adam hesitated for a moment. In principle, he shouldn’t keep anything from He Jingyao, but when he met Su Zixi’s eyes, which were darker than usual, he found himself nodding involuntarily.
“That’s great.” Su Zixi’s smile bloomed, “You promised, right? Don’t break your word.”
“Yes, Young Mistress,” Adam replied with a wry smile, regretting that he had foolishly nodded.
Su Zixi looked as if she had let out a sigh of relief, “Then I’m leaving.”
With that, she turned and stepped into the elevator.
But as soon as the elevator doors closed, Su Zixi couldn’t help but lean against the wall as if all her strength had been drained away.
