The higher-up did not like how fast Gu Qinghua was rising and, feeling that his future standing and power were threatened, came up with this plan to destroy Gu Qinghua.
He had not expected that Gu Qinghua would have collected the evidences and cleared his own name in such a short amount of time.

The higher-up knew that the truth about Yang Wanni and the child would be revealed soon enough so he orchestrated Yang Wannis death and moved on to the disillusion that Gu Qinghua murdered Yang Wanni because she had been pestering him and he couldnt clarify things with her and didnt want her to affect his future.
Unfortunately, that plan failed as well.
Failing to set Gu Qinghua up, the higher-up had no choice but to have Yang Wanni died from illness.

Gu Yaobai, as his real son, wasnt entirely used by that person in setting up the Gu family. Being under the same roof, Gu Yaobai had always lived under the shadows of the real Gu sons and were always critiqued by others. As such, ruining the glory of the three Gu brothers had always been his wish.
Lin Yize, too, had taken the opportunity to destroy Gu Shao and made sure that Gu Shao had gone bankrupt and his reputation in shambles.
That was too scary
Recalling details that had or hadnt been mentioned in the novel, Gu Xi suddenly felt a chill down her spine.
Here she thought she was in a early clich, braindead romance with warped morals and everything that happened derived from the clich love story between the male and female leads. She hadnt expected there were so many terrifying incidents that was beyond her reach.
And the worse part of it all was that the person hidden in the dark that wanted to bring down the Gu family was a man that Old Mr. Gu think of as his beloved teacher.

Gu Xis hand holding onto her spoon starting shaking and her palm was sweating. She didnt even notice that her knuckles were turning white from her grip.
Gu Shao, next to her, noticed the changes in her and asked her in a low voice, Whats the matter?
Brought back by her fathers voice, Gu Xi shook her head reflexively.
She looked over in Gu Yaobais direction reflexively but quickly looked away as she didnt want to alarm him.
Gu Xi tried very hard to keep herself from wanting to leave the dining table and tell the story arc in the novel to Gu Shao and Old Mr. Gu but she couldnt tell them just yet. They would only think that she was crazy if she mentioned the novel and she might alarm the villains.
No, nothing, said Gu Xi in a low voice while biting down on the spoon.
Gu Shao gave Gu Xi a quiet look and, making sure that she was okay, unfurrowed his brows.
You dont have to finish the food if you cant finish them, said Gu Shao as he look at the pile of food in front of Gu Xi.
He worried that Gu Xi would have a hard time turning down Old Mr. Gu and the three boys kindness and stuffed herself.
Having said that, Gu Shao even gave the three boys a look.
Okay, Gu Xi nodded.
