Mu Mingtang was speechless for a moment and actually thought about it, wondering if she was the one with a cognitive problem. After all this, did Xie Xuanchen really think that he played the role of a loving father?
Although Xie Xuanchen drove Xie Changan away without mercy, he actually thought that he was being rather compassionate to his son all along. Xie Xuanchen said, “After all, he is different from the other kids. If I were to go along with his tantrums all day and spoil him, that would be a waste of the resources and the talents that he inherited from me. After I’m done handling this wave of tasks, I will have a martial arts master teach him some skills. Coddling him will be of no use, so I will need to make sure he is taught how to protect himself.”
Mu Mingtang knew that Xie Xuanchen was right, but as a parent, there were always things to worry about. She merely sighed and asked, “Was it the same for you when you were a child?”
“Of course not,” Xie Xuanchen vetoed, “I lived a much livelier life than him.”
Mu Mingtang was appalled by his brazen contradiction and didn’t feel like she wanted to talk to him anymore. She sat down for such a long time before she remembered to ask Xie Xuanchen the reason for his visit, “What are you doing here so suddenly?”
“The Royal Embroidery Department has prepared your ceremonial gown and I happened to be on my way over, so I dropped by to give you the outfit,” Xie Xuanchen raised his eyebrows and asked, “Perhaps, am I only welcomed if there are matters here I need to attend to? If there is nothing of the urgency, am I not allowed to merely come and see you?”
How the heck he was always able to give the worst answers was quite an ability of itself to Mu Mingtang. She was getting even more aggravated with every answer of his, so she decided to just ignore him and stood up, “So where are the robes? I haven’t seen the entire set yet.”
Xie Xuanchen accompanied her into the inner room. At this moment, a complete set of the Empress’s ceremonial robes were hanging on the shelf. It set a solemn and complex mood seeing as to how royal and grand it appeared to be.
Mu Mingtang’s head started to ache when she saw it, “It’s this elaborate? How heavy is this going to be?”
“All ceremonial robes are like this,” Xie Xuanchen looked at the dignified and gorgeous outfit in front of him. He suddenly came to a realisation that Mu Mingtang had always been the one dressing him all along whereas he had never really noticed what she wore.
He didn’t even know the order of wearing such a grand set of clothes.
Mu Mingtang noticed that Xie Xuanchen was deep in thought and asked curiously, “What are you thinking about?”
Xie Xuanchen looked at her and said slowly, “It just hit me that usually, you are the one who’s helping me put on my armour but I have yet to help you dress.”
Mu Mingtang became vigilant upon hearing this and immediately countered, “No, I don’t need you to do that.”
“How can that be?” Xie Xuanchen said very modestly, “It’s merely a courtesy. It is incredibly insincere of me to only know how to undress clothes but not put them on. So, let me help you out.”
