“Who is Charli?” Kate looked at him, with a somewhat unfriendly expression. “It sounds like a girl’s name.”
“Charli is my secretary and assistant, full name Charlize Theron,” Adrian said with a smile as he hugged her. “Remember the girl I mentioned to you, the one I met in New York years ago? That’s Charli.”
“So you’re saying that you met her years ago in New York, said a few encouraging words; years later, she came to Los Angeles and became your secretary and assistant. Is that what you mean, Ed?” Kate asked, staring at him.
“It seems unbelievable, but it really happened, life is sometimes more dramatic than movies,” Adrian said, kissing her on the head. “Alright, enough about that, I really have to go back.”
“Since when can a secretary and assistant give orders to the boss?” Kate’s eyes narrowed.
“A secretary and assistant can never give orders to the boss, but she can make suggestions, and if the suggestion is right, then the boss should follow it,” Adrian shrugged. “Charli is an excellent assistant, she always manages work matters properly, so her opinion is worth considering.”

As she looked into his eyes, Kate’s mouth moved but no words came out, and a trembling feeling surged from her heart. Her thoughts seemed to drift back to the day she learned about Adrian’s double scandals with Julia and Monica, to the intense jealousy when she secretly bought alcohol to numb her pain while still in the hospital, getting completely drunk. The next day, she woke up not only with a splitting headache but also with a warning from the hospital, and her discharge was delayed by several days. The on-duty nurse said that that night she was sobbing so much in her bed, they thought she might drown in her own tears.
“Kate? Are you alright, Kate?” Adrian’s voice sounded again.
“I’m fine, just…” Kate gestured absently, looking up into Adrian’s concerned eyes and couldn’t help but give a bitter smile.
After “Twisters” wrapped up, she tried to date other men to forget him, but most were arrogant young men who liked to show off and she found them repulsive; even a few considerate men who spoke charmingly were quickly dismissed when she involuntarily compared them to Adrian.

“I’m really leaving, Kate,” Adrian kissed the top of her head again, “but I’ll be back soon, I promise. When I do, let’s take some time to relax, like going back to London together. Emma misses you a lot.”
“She does not miss me. She’d be thrilled if I disappeared forever,” Kate retorted subconsciously.
“How could that be? When I visited her in London over the New Year, she asked about you,” Adrian shrugged his shoulders. Seeing her turn around with a look of curiosity, he laughed again, “Emma asked me if you were no longer with me and if you would never come back. If that’s true, I’d be so happy!”
He deliberately imitated a little girl’s voice, making Kate involuntarily swing her fist as if to hit him.
Adrian dodged with a laugh, then let go of her, “Okay, I’m really leaving now. Take care of yourself and watch your health. Your injury has just healed recently, hasn’t it?”
“I know.” Kate nodded and felt Adrian’s caress under her ribs. Then suddenly she looked at him, “Roger told you, didn’t he?”
“Yes,” he hesitated for two seconds before nodding, “after all, I’m his boss.”
Kate opened her mouth but ended up letting out a self-mocking snicker, “Even without him, you’d have other ways to get information about me, right? You arranged for me to star in ‘Twisters,’ didn’t you? You know everything about me, don’t you?”
“Of course, the script was written for you,” Adrian looked at her unblinkingly, “I’ve said it before, I’ve lost you once, and I won’t lose you again, Kate!”
With that, he caught her chin, leaned down, and gently sucked on her rose-colored lips.
“You’re mine,” Adrian declared.
