Chapter 45: 45 fat white buns
Over here, Ye Gaosheng and Ye Wenqing had just entered the pastry shop when Ye Jiu dashed across to the bun vendor and anxiously asked, “Uncle, how much for the buns?”
“Two coins for vegetarian, three for meat.”
“Give me twenty meat and twenty vegetarian.” Ye Jiu said while counting her money, full of urgency.
Exactly one hundred coins; Ye Jiu counted and paid. The buns were also wrapped in oil paper, five to a package.
Ye Jiu picked up the wrapped buns and turned around. Using this opportunity, she placed ten meat and ten vegetarian buns into the Plane Space. That was also the reason she didn’t want Ye Wenqing watching her.
With someone around, trying to do anything is always so difficult. It can’t compare to the convenience of being alone!
Moreover, she wasn’t storing these items solely for her own consumption; importantly, she couldn’t possibly trade with La Sike using eggs every time!
Ye Jiu returned to the other side, just as Ye Gaosheng and Ye Wenqing exited the pastry shop. Noticing the four oil paper packages in Ye Jiu’s hands, Ye Gaosheng asked, “Little sister, did you go shopping alone?”
“There’s a bun vendor across the street, we hadn’t eaten breakfast when we left this morning, so I went to buy a few.” Ye Jiu responded, handing over an oil paper package, “Fourth brother, Wenqing, eat them while they’re still hot.”
Ye Wenqing knew Ye Jiu had a hundred taels of silver, which was reassuring, but Ye Gaosheng couldn’t help but feel a bit suspicious.
Dad said buying meat was too expensive, and mom said there was no money; they even had to sell the large rooster to buy some. Yet looking at little sister’s splurging on fabric and buns, it’s clear mom gave her quite a bit of money!
Luckily, Ye Gaosheng was easygoing and didn’t dwell on things he couldn’t figure out, deciding he would simply ask them when he got home.
When they opened the oil paper packages, both couldn’t help but swallow their saliva.
Five plump, large buns with what appeared to be meat filling greeted them. They couldn’t recall when they last ate buns!
Back then, several people would share one bun, and each person only really got a taste.
Seeing there were still three packages in Ye Jiu’s hands, each family member had their share, which reassured Ye Gaosheng and Ye Wenqing.
“Little sister, put the buns in the basket, and I’ll carry it. You haven’t eaten much this morning, have a bun to fill your stomach,” Ye Gaosheng insisted, putting off his own hunger to take care of Ye Jiu.
Neither Ye Gaosheng nor Ye Wenqing knew about Mrs. He secretly feeding Ye Jiu an egg inside the house, fearing it might upset them, Ye Jiu naturally wouldn’t mention it.
When Ye Jiu took a bun and started to eat, smelling the enticing aroma, they couldn’t resist and began eating as well.
The buns were generously filled. Ye Jiu generally didn’t eat much, and after one bun, she was almost full.
Seeing that Ye Jiu was truly full, Ye Gaosheng and Ye Wenqing then reassuredly divided the remaining two buns per person.
On the way home, Ye Gaosheng still carried Ye Jiu for a part of the journey which sparked in Ye Jiu the idea of buying an ox cart for the first time.
By the time they reached home, it was nearly afternoon. From a distance, Ye Jiu spotted Mrs. He standing at the entrance of the Ye family’s house, waiting.
Ye Jiu immediately struggled off Ye Gaosheng’s back, ran home, and embraced Mrs. He’s frail body, “Mom, I’m back.”
“Oh my dear child, you’re finally back; you had mom so worried, my heart was all over the place.” Mrs. He pushed Ye Jiu away, carefully checking her from head to toe, and only relaxed when she saw no injuries.
