George Stanford was a surprisingly spontaneous man. For impoverished people unable to pay high surgery fees, he offered unconditional medical treatment. As for nobles and tycoons, he never fawned on them, curried favor, or treated them. No matter how much pressure was applied, he would rather die than yield.
William Guillen’s mother had been married by a rich second-generation man that year, which was why George Stanford still kept his distance from tycoons and dignitaries to this day. This was also why, even before Charlie River made an appearance, William Guillen had already concluded he would be refused.
Rather than hitting a wall right at the start, it was better to devise a well-thought-out plan.
For tonight’s banquet, William Guillen had sent an invitation to George Stanford in his mother’s name. The banquet had started, but he still hadn’t arrived.
William Guillen himself wasn’t sure if George would come tonight. He tapped the ash from his cigarette. "But don’t be disheartened," he said to Thomas Shannon. "Even if George Stanford doesn’t come tonight, I’ll have my mother personally invite him tomorrow."
"Aren’t you afraid your father will be angry?"
William Guillen was indeed a little apprehensive. He shot Thomas Shannon an irritated glance. "Isn’t this all for you? If it were anyone else, I’d have kicked them so hard they’d fly off, telling them to get as far away as possible."
Thomas Shannon chuckled and patted Lan Singh’s shoulder. "Alright, pick any wine you want. Help yourself in my wine cellar."
"You said it, so I won’t hold back." William Guillen stroked his chin. Thomas Shannon’s wine cellar was filled with rare and valuable vintages. Drinking one of these bottles meant one less like it in the world.

"Hello, I’m Monique Mok. And what’s your name?"
Sophie Sullivan raised her head, her gaze shifting from the food to William Guillen’s female companion for the evening. The corner of her lips curved slightly. "I’m not interested in telling anyone my name."
Monique Mok hadn’t expected to be rejected. She smiled faintly. "Don’t you know who I am? I starred in the movie released this year that grossed 2.1 billion at the box office within a week."
Sophie nodded as if in sudden understanding. Monique Mok waited for her to volunteer her name.
Sophie just said perfunctorily, "Oh, so you’re an actor."
How could Young Master Shannon’s companion be so unappreciative?Did she really think she could become Young Master Shannon’s girlfriend?So naive!She doesn’t even understand leveraging connections! "Is there anything else? If not, don’t block my light."
Sophie spoke, then raised the fork in her hand, waving it gently to the side as if to dismiss her.
"Hey, woman, how can you be so unappreciative?" Monique Mok was now a highly sought-after female star. Thanks to her blockbuster movie, she had already risen to the ranks of A-list actresses.
If it weren’t for the fact that the maniac was Thomas Shannon’s companion, Monique Mok wouldn’t have condescended to talk to her.
Just as Sophie was about to speak, another voice interjected.
"Monique Mok, I’ll give you one minute to disappear from my sight. Otherwise, you’ll spend the next five years in hiding."
Fluffy Zane approached from the side, an elegant and poised smile on her lips. Yet the words she spoke struck Monique Mok right where it hurt.
"Miss Zane, there’s a limit to willfulness. Even if you’re willing, would the President agree to abandon me, his cash cow, and have me put into hiding?"
Fluffy Zane’s smile didn’t falter. "You can try."
Though spoken lightly, the words sent Monique Mok into a panic.
