Harriet White told Evelyn Taylor a lot, from the time the Taylor Family’s elders drove out Lily Turner and her mother, to their dying words later on. She didn’t leave anything out.
The reason she did this was to let Evelyn know the truth, and to stop her as a daughter from acting foolishly. This kind of behavior was truly harmful, not only to others but also to herself.
Such unpleasant things must be stopped, or else, once they become uncontrollable, it would be completely over.
"Since Grandpa and Grandma drove them out, why did they regret it later?" Evelyn wasn’t puzzled about why the elders of the Taylor Family did that; she just couldn’t understand why they were so conflicted. Because of Easton Holmes, she couldn’t accept in her heart the fact that Lily Turner was her cousin.
Seeing Evelyn stuck in a dead end, Harriet White felt a bit anxious inside, but outwardly she tried to remain calm. She couldn’t get caught up in her daughter’s chaos; that would only mess things up.
"Your grandparents, overwhelmed with grief at the time, did something that they regretted for the rest of their lives." Harriet White turned to face Evelyn seriously and sternly, "I don’t want you to make decisions in anger that you’ll regret."
Her daughter was now stuck in a mire, and as a mother, she had to pull her out, otherwise, she would sink deeper into this mire.
Seeing her mother suddenly become so serious, Evelyn was both surprised and confused, with a tinge of resentment.
Her mother had never spoken to her so sternly before, but today she did it for that wild girl Lily Turner, and Evelyn just couldn’t accept it.
"What on earth is so great about that wild girl? Why is everyone speaking up for her? It’s one thing for Easton and Dad to stand up for her, but now even you are siding with her." Evelyn couldn’t understand why her own mother wouldn’t support her but instead sided with an outsider.
Why couldn’t she just get over this?
Harriet White sighed, reaching out to take Evelyn’s hand, "Evelyn! I’ve always thought you’re a good girl. I believe you’ll definitely find a man who genuinely appreciates and loves you in the future."
These were her heartfelt words. Harriet had wanted to tell her daughter this for some time but had never found the right opportunity.
Even though it was under these circumstances today, in this setting, she felt the timing was very appropriate.
"But I..."
"But Easton is already with Lily. Love is a matter between two people; having three becomes a crowd, don’t you think?"
As soon as Evelyn opened her mouth, Harriet knew what she wanted to say. Before Evelyn could express her thoughts, Harriet continued.
Harriet looked at her daughter standing before her, patiently waiting silently, waiting for her daughter to give her an answer. She believed her daughter would eventually understand.
Even if she couldn’t see it now, Harriet was confident her daughter would come around in the near future.
Evelyn didn’t respond verbally to Harriet’s question. She lowered her head and silently stared at her feet. Seeing her like this, Harriet knew she had listened to what she had just said, she just hadn’t figured it all out yet.
"Your dad and brother have been inside for a long time. Let’s hurry in, or they’ll get anxious waiting for us." Harriet didn’t press Evelyn for an answer but completely shifted the topic to give her daughter the time and space to slowly come to terms with it.
During this time, all she needed to do was to be a quiet observer.
