Early this morning, Luo Qiao brought quite a few snacks prepared by Rong Daniang, according to the Chinese custom, as a festival gift for Professor Wilson.
As soon as she entered the laboratory, Steven and Emma rushed over.
Emma smiled brightly, “Luo, what’s all this?”
Luo Qiao took a big bag out from inside: “These are for everyone.”
Then, carrying a few other bags, she said: “These are prepared by my family for the professor. In China, we call these festival gifts, for my teacher.”
Professor Wilson was coming out from inside, childlike: “Don’t fight with me over them.”
Everyone burst into laughter.
Professor Wilson’s wife was very fond of Chinese culture, especially the food, and she had mentioned before that she wanted to visit Luo Qiao’s home.
However, there just hasn’t been time and opportunity.
Professor Wilson put away the gifts, then came back out carrying two bags with four bottles of red wine: “Luo, this is a festival gift from my wife to you, she really loves Chinese food.”
Luo Qiao received them with a smile: “Then I welcome Professor to bring your wife, oh, we call her in Chinese ‘the professor’s wife’, to my home as guests, to taste authentic Chinese cuisine.”
Professor Wilson was clearly very pleased: “Oh, if my wife knew, she would be delighted. Thank you, Luo.”
Everyone finished off the five-spiced twists Luo Qiao brought, and as time was almost up, they packed up and began the day’s work.
Since Luo Qiao’s return, she had already reviewed all the previously collected data and pointed out three issues, even proposing new methods. After retesting, it proved to be more suitable indeed.
Professor Wilson called her a genius, very sensitive to data and with a sense of smell sharper than most.
Previously, Professor Wilson brought a new allergy medicine developed in another laboratory, which Luo Qiao was able to identify all the components of just by smell, without a single mistake.
It was just the specific dosages of the ingredients that were not immediately mentioned, which was only a matter of time. Hence, several professors who knew about this often invited Professor Wilson for coffee, mainly to discuss with Luo Qiao.
Finishing the day’s work and leaving the laboratory, she thought she was seeing things, even rubbing her eyes, wondering if she was missing Yichen too much.
But when she looked up, that person was still standing there, smiling even more radiantly. It wasn’t an illusion, and pinching her face to feel the pain confirmed it wasn’t a dream.
She saw the figure in the distance stretching out his arms, smiling as he walked towards her.
Luo Qiao couldn’t care less about her senior brothers and sisters around her, letting out a cry and dropping her books, running straight into Lu Yichen’s embrace: “How come you’re here?”
“I missed you, so I came. Are you happy?”
“Mm, mm, mm, happy, so happy, truly too happy.”
At that moment, a senior brother who had come out with the group, happened to be fiddling with his camera and snapped a lot of pictures of Luo Qiao, murmuring to himself: “Oh, it’s really beautiful.”
Once the couple had enough of their affectionate display, they remembered people were behind them. Luo Qiao quickly hopped down from Lu Yichen’s embrace, somewhat embarrassed, she said: “Brother Chen, let me introduce you to my senior brothers and sisters, they’ve been really good to me.”
Luo Qiao confidently pulled Lu Yichen up in front of everyone. Although some people recognized Lu Yichen, Luo Qiao introduced him again: “This is my husband, Lu Yichen.”
Emma stepped forward: “Hello, I’m Emma, Luo’s good friend.”
Lu Yichen smiled and nodded: “Hello.”
Steven came forward to greet him too, then the senior brother who took the photos stepped up: “Luo, I took some pictures for you; I’ll give them to you when they’re developed.”
Luo Qiao was delighted to hear that: “Oh, thank you so much.”
Bidding farewell to everyone, the couple then held hands and walked back. Emma, who was still standing not far away and hadn’t left, said with some envy: “They really are so much in love.”
Steven laughed as he looked at Emma: “We could be too.”
Emma, catching on, exclaimed: “Oh my gosh, what are you talking about, that’s not funny at all.”
With that, she turned and ran off.
