Reincarnated as the Villain: The System Made Me Overpowered Chapter 43

The rain hadn’t stopped in hours.

It whispered against the ruined earth in ceaseless sheets, icy and constant, like the world itself was trying to drown its own memories. Valerian stood atop a crag of black stone, cloak sodden and heavy, shoulders squared against the cold wind. The ridge overlooked what had once been the province of Glairemoor — now just ash, bones, and ghosts.

The wetness didn’t reach him anymore. Not truly. His skin had grown numb to the world. But behind his eyes... there was a dull throb. A pulse like a warning bell. The place the System always whispered from — that invisible thread wrapped around his soul.

> [System Notification: You are being watched.]

The message shimmered in his mind’s eye, stark and cold as metal.

He scanned the landscape. Fog lay thick across the valley, curling through the skeletal remains of temples, burnt-out manors, and the broken columns of an old spire once used for rituals now long outlawed. Glairemoor hadn’t been conquered — it had been erased. Official records claimed it was a purge against heresy, a necessary cleansing by the Imperial Church.

But Valerian had seen deeper truths.

This wasn’t just a battlefield.

It was a graveyard for something older. Forgotten. And angry.

He reached for his comm crystal, meaning to send a word to his party, but froze as a voice—low, sharp—cut through the fog like a blade.

He didn’t turn in alarm. He’d already sensed her.

Lady Selene emerged from the mist, braid damp and violet eyes alight with irritation. Her cloak shimmered faintly with protective runes that repelled the worst of the weather. Behind her trudged Kael, his shoulders tense, blade sheathed across his back and eyes flicking to every ruined structure. Last came Lira, pale as frost, clutching her staff like it was the only solid thing in the world.

"You vanish into cursed territory," Selene snapped, stopping in front of him, "and the only explanation you leave is a half-burned symbol in the dirt?"

Valerian raised a brow. "It was written in blood, technically. Adds character."

Lira crossed her arms, unimpressed. "It said, Don’t follow unless you want to die."

Kael snorted. "You’ve got the worst way of asking for alone time."

Valerian sighed and looked away. "And yet here you are."

Selene didn’t laugh. She stepped closer, voice low, almost pleading.

"You’re not alone in this anymore. Stop pretending you have to be."

The words struck harder than she likely intended.

Because some part of him wanted to be alone.

This place—it whispered to something in him. A pull in his chest, subtle and wrong. Even Umbra, his most loyal summon, refused to emerge unbidden. And the mana in the air... it was too thick. Too old. It felt like the air itself had intent.

Kael knelt, pressing a hand to the soaked soil. His brow furrowed.

"Mana’s dense. Corrupted. It’s like it’s waiting."

Lira’s voice was almost a whimper. "It’s watching us."

> [System Notification: Unknown Arcane Signature Detected.]

Down below, past the ridge’s edge, a silhouette stood motionless in the mist. A man draped in priest robes that clung like rotted parchment, skin slack and gray. Where eyes once were, melted wax wept down sunken cheeks. Yet despite the decay, its mouth curved in a grotesque smile.

Valerian stepped forward, instincts sharpened.

The corpse raised one slow, deliberate arm — and pointed.

"Chosen of the Black Moon," it rasped. Its voice was dry wind through broken glass. "Your soul is fractured."

Selene’s jaw tensed. She didn’t back down, but her hand hovered near her blade.

"Scion of stolen flame. The fire in you... is not yours."

Kael’s fingers twitched. Fire crackled along the edge of his blade, faint but rising.

Then it turned to Valerian.

The word shattered the silence.

Lira gasped. "It... just called you..."

Valerian’s heart skipped a beat. "No. That’s—no."

The creature’s chest split open like paper peeling under flame. From the wound burst not blood, but jagged light and black shadow, tendrils unfurling into mock wings. Ancient runes writhed across its body as a ring of violet flame formed above its brow like a corrupted halo.

> [System Alert: RELIC-WRAITH: CLASS SIGMA encountered.]

> Entity is linked to an unsealed truth. Containment not advised. Objective: Terminate or Submit.

Kael growled. "What kind of system suggests submission?"

Valerian said nothing.

Because it disturbed him too. Deeply.

Above, the clouds twisted. A swirling eye formed in the sky — no metaphor — an actual eye. Living. Watching. Judging.

Selene struck first. Hexfire bolts hissed into the air, exploding around the Wraith. Lira raised wards, casting overlapping barriers. Kael ignited, dashing forward with crimson flame trailing his blade.

Valerian didn’t move.

Darkness ripped the air apart behind him. Umbra towered into existence — a cathedral of claws and writhing coils, eyes burning with unnatural light. It loomed over the Wraith like death incarnate.

> [Bond Level 3 — Loyalty: Absolute.]

But the Wraith only smiled wider.

"This one remembers," it said. "Before the Split. Before the System. Before you were reborn."

Valerian’s mind reeled. "What... are you talking about?"

"You are not the first," the Wraith said softly. "You are the echo."

And then it lunged — not at Valerian.

He moved without thought.

Shadowstepped to her side, slamming the Wraith mid-air and crashing it into the stone below. His gauntlet flared with null-magic as he struck.

"You. Don’t. Touch. Her."

> [System Update: Memory Fragment Identified.]

The Wraith began to laugh.

Its body ignited with black-blue flame, collapsing from the inside out. Not screaming — laughing — as though amused by the pain.

In its final moment, it whispered:

> "Catch up soon... Valerian."

And then it was gone.

But something remained.

A flash behind Valerian’s eyes — a memory not his own. A sterile white room. A mirror.

In the reflection — Alex.

> "You’re catching up to me. Took you long enough."

The storm began to die. The eye in the sky faded. Fog rolled back, silent and slow.

Until Selene moved beside him, her fingers brushing his arm. "What... did it mean?"

Valerian’s voice was distant. "I don’t think that was just a Wraith."

Lira hugged herself. "It felt... like a message."

Kael’s knuckles whitened around his hilt. "Then maybe it’s time we send one back."

The sky was clear — but he felt it.
