Reincarnated as the Villain: The System Made Me Overpowered Chapter 44

The ruins of Glairemoor didn’t return to silence.

Even after the Wraith’s destruction, the ground underfoot carried a hum—low, constant, like a heartbeat trapped beneath stone. The fog thinned, but it never vanished. It clung to the wreckage like a living thing, curling between shattered spires and crumbled sanctuaries.

Valerian stood at the epicenter of the blast zone, his boots crunching over scorched stone. Umbra’s wings folded behind him, obsidian scales dimming as the creature’s presence faded. It didn’t vanish—not fully—but melted into shadow once more, waiting.

The echo of the Wraith’s final words still rang inside him.

> "You are the echo."

"Valerian." Lira’s voice was soft, cautious. "Did you... see something?"

He didn’t respond immediately. His hand flexed at his side. Still trembling. The shard—the memory fragment—had embedded itself deep, and even now it gnawed at his thoughts like a parasite.

"Yeah," he finally muttered. "Too much."

Selene stepped to his side, her brows furrowed, eyes scanning his features. "It called you ’Master.’ That wasn’t just some haunting or mistake. It knew you."

Kael sheathed his sword, face dark. "And it knew us. Our bloodlines. Our magic. Our flaws. That wasn’t an illusion."

"No," Valerian agreed quietly. "It was something else. Like it had... history with us."

Lira’s grip on her staff tightened. "The System said it was linked to an unsealed truth. What the hell does that even mean?"

Valerian didn’t answer—not directly. He turned to the ruined skyline of Glairemoor. The blackened remains of cathedrals clawed at the sky, their hollow spires broken like bones. Once, this had been a thriving province. And then it had been wiped off the map.

Not because of rebellion.

Not because of heresy.

But because of something that had remembered.

"We’re not dealing with just monsters," he said at last. "We’re dealing with remnants."

Selene frowned. "Remnants of what?"

Then, to everyone’s surprise, Lira spoke. "I’ve read old doctrines. Texts that the Academy redacted after the Church burned this place. Some called Glairemoor the Nexus of Unseen Truths. Said it was a place where ’the veil was weakest.’"

"The barrier between us and the System," she said, voice distant. "Between who we are and what came before."

Valerian turned to her, heart skipping.

"You’re saying this place knew the System before it was the System?"

She hesitated... then nodded. "I think the people here were trying to understand it. Before it controlled the world."

A beat of silence followed.

Then Selene stepped forward. "There’s a vault beneath the main chapel ruins. A structure beneath the chapel’s inner sanctum. I saw it on the old maps before the purge. It’s not listed on any current registry. Not even in the Empire’s records."

Valerian gave a grim smile. "Then that’s exactly where we’re going."

They reached the cathedral’s remains within the hour.

The main nave had collapsed, roof caved in by fire and age. A half-melted statue of a weeping angel leaned sideways, one wing shattered, the other fused into slag.

But beneath the altar—exactly where Selene had said—a hidden stairwell descended into darkness.

Valerian led the way.

Umbra’s shadow coiled protectively around him as they moved down into the depths. The deeper they went, the colder it grew. Not just in temperature, but in memory. The air was heavy with things unsaid. With the whispers of people long dead.

The stairs ended in a vast underground vault.

A perfect white chamber, unmarred by decay or time. Walls gleamed with unknown metal. Symbols—half-familiar, half-wrong—glowed faintly along the perimeter.

Lira gasped. "This isn’t... this isn’t Imperial."

Kael drew his blade. "No. It’s older."

Valerian moved to the center, where a podium rose from the floor.

But the mirror didn’t show their reflections.

He stood in a white room identical to theirs. Smiling faintly. Dressed in the old Academy uniform—before Valerian’s death, before everything.

"Hello," the reflection said.

Selene’s hand sparked with hexfire. "Is that... him?"

Valerian took a slow step forward. "It’s Alex. My original."

Alex’s image tilted his head. "You’re late."

Valerian narrowed his eyes. "What is this? What do you want?"

"I’ve been leaving you breadcrumbs," Alex said casually. "Wraiths. Fragments. Messages. And you’ve been doing well... for a second attempt."

"You’re the echo," Alex said simply. "The System’s failsafe. Its second prototype. When I broke free... it needed a replacement. So it made you."

Valerian’s pulse roared in his ears.

The room began to dim. The symbols on the walls pulsed faster. Alex’s image flickered.

"Keep going, Valerian," he said, tone growing serious. "If you want the truth, you’ll have to earn it. But know this — the System isn’t your ally. It’s your leash. And I..."

Alex’s eyes locked with his.

"...am what’s waiting at the end."

Then the mirror shattered.

A pulse of light surged outward.

The vault walls began to collapse.

They bolted back through the stairs, the ground buckling behind them. Firelight chased their heels as arcane defenses triggered centuries too late.

They didn’t stop running until they reached the surface.

The ridge above Glairemoor stood quiet again.

But the others had questions. Dozens. Questions Valerian couldn’t yet answer.

He stood at the edge of the ruined field, rain finally ceasing. The sky remained gray, the eye gone... for now.

Selene stepped beside him.

"No," he said honestly. "But I’m awake."

She watched him for a moment, then nodded. "You believe him."

"I don’t want to," Valerian murmured. "But I do."

Kael and Lira approached.

"What now?" Kael asked.

Valerian looked out at the dead city.

"We find the next memory fragment. We chase the truth. And we find out why the hell I was made to replace him."

He turned toward the east — toward the forbidden spires of the Hollow Sprawl.

"We head for the next site."

Lira swallowed. "What’s there?"

Valerian’s voice was quiet.

"And maybe," he added, almost to himself, "another piece of me."

> [System Warning: Trajectory deviating from intended path.]

> [Recalculating fate...]

> [Intervention Likely.]

And somewhere far beyond the veil, Alex watched. Waiting.
