Chapter 33 - Echoes of the Abyss
Jin-Ho Kang stood at the edge of a ruined battlefield, his gaze fixed on the crimson sky overhead. The air was thick with the scent of blood and the weight of lingering death. Torn banners flapped weakly in the wind, and the bodies of the fallen stretched as far as his eyes could see. This was the aftermath of his power—a reminder of what it meant to be the Shadow Monarch.
Yet, despite the carnage, an uneasy silence pervaded the land. The clash of weapons had ceased, the screams of the dying had faded, but something darker remained, whispering from the depths of the abyss.
Jin-Ho exhaled, his breath forming a cold mist against the unnatural air. He turned, his glowing eyes scanning the battlefield, searching for something—no, someone.
"You're still hiding?" he murmured, his voice carrying across the wasteland. "Come out. I don't have all day."
The ground trembled. The shadows stretched unnaturally, coiling like living serpents. Then, from the darkness, a figure emerged—a being clad in tattered robes, its face obscured beneath a hood. Ethereal energy pulsed around it, distorting reality itself.
"Jin-Ho Kang," the entity intoned, its voice layered with countless whispers. "The Monarch of Shadows... Do you truly understand what you have awakened?"
Jin-Ho narrowed his eyes. "I understand enough. And if you're here to preach, save your breath."
The figure chuckled, a sound like dry leaves rustling in the wind. "You wield the abyss, yet you are still bound by mortal hesitation. Do you not feel it? The weight of eternity pressing upon your soul?"
Jin-Ho took a step forward, his shadow surging in response. "I feel nothing but resolve."
The entity raised a hand, and the space around them twisted. Reality fractured, and suddenly, Jin-Ho found himself standing in an endless void. Stars blinked in and out of existence. He could hear voices—echoes of lives lost, of souls devoured by the abyss.
He clenched his fists. The whispers did not scare him. He had long since embraced the darkness.
"You are close to becoming something more," the entity continued, stepping closer. "But do you truly wish to walk this path? To exist beyond time, beyond fate itself? You will become a god, but you will be alone."
Jin-Ho smiled, a sharp, knowing smile. "Alone?"
The shadows behind him stirred, and from the abyss, his legion of specters rose. Silent warriors, wraiths of unfathomable strength, their eyes glowing with unholy fire. They stood behind him, an army of the forsaken, bound to his will.
"I am never alone."
The entity hesitated, then let out a low chuckle. "Very well, Monarch of Shadows. Then embrace your fate."
The void shattered, and Jin-Ho was back on the battlefield. The figure was gone, but the echoes of its words lingered in his mind. He looked down at his hand, feeling the abyss hum beneath his skin.
There was no turning back.
With a flick of his wrist, the shadows surged forward once more, consuming the land, shaping it anew. This was his domain now. The world would learn to fear the name Jin-Ho Kang.
The Shadow Monarch had only just begun his reign.
